SIGNAL OVERVIEW
Developed-market governments are the largest debt issuers in the world. When their sovereign-bond markets wobble, institutional capital rotates into gold as the ancient non-fiat store of value. The October 2022 UK Liz Truss mini-budget is the modern archetype: unfunded tax cuts triggered a gilt yield spike from 3.5 to 4.5 percent in days, pension-fund margin calls, and emergency BOE intervention. Capital moved from sovereign credit into gold; gold ETF rallied through the following two months. This signal reads 10-year sovereign yields across five G10 countries (UK gilts, French OATs, Italian BTPs, Japanese JGBs, US Treasuries), aggregates into a fiscal-stress basket, z-scores on a 1,260-day rolling window, and bounds through tanh. On October 4, 2022 the composite reached its series maximum plus 0.9987 as the UK gilt crisis dominated. On August 2, 2019 the composite reached its series minimum minus 0.9949 as pre-COVID global yield compression pushed G10 yields to multi-decade lows. Today the composite reads +0.921, in Extreme POS territory.
LIVE CHART
The 504-day z-score of a multi-input composite of US credit-quality indicators including BAA-AAA corporate spreads, 9016 trading days of history for GC.
The dark line in the top panel is the composite, bounded between minus one and plus one. The pale red band at the top marks the G10 fiscal-stress regime where aggregate sovereign yields are elevated or volatile relative to their 5-year baseline; this has historically preceded gold-ETF rallies as safe-haven demand lifts gold. The pale green band at the bottom marks fiscal calm. The bronze line in the middle panel is the trailing 252-day rolling Spearman IC against gold ETF forward 60-day returns. The lower panel is gold ETF price on the right axis in dollars per share.

WHY THE SIGNAL IS HERE
The underlying input is at its current level relative to the 504-day baseline. The composite reflects this with the sign-convention stated in section 2.
POSTURE FOR THE WEEKS AHEAD
The signal's historical edge is concentrated at the tanh-saturation extremes (composite below minus 0.5 or above plus 0.5). The cross-sample Pearson IC of -0.0248 on SPY forward-sixty-day is a reference-asset read; the appropriate direct read is GC forward returns, which are not computed as a baseline in this page.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
Today the composite reads +0.921, placing the dot inside the Extreme POS band. The five G10 sovereign-yield series refresh daily; watch UK gilt auctions and Italian BTP supply windows as leading catalysts.
TOP INPUTS FIRING
- UK 10-year gilt yield UK sovereign stress component; historically the most reactive leg of the basket.
- Italy 10-year BTP yield European periphery sovereign stress; wider spreads indicate stress.
- Japan 10-year JGB yield BoJ-yield-curve-control break risk; high JGB vol signals developed-market stress contagion.

What this measures
Developed-market sovereign-bond market stress drives institutional rotation into gold as the ancient non-fiat store of value. The signal reads 10-year sovereign yields from the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Japan, and the United States, aggregates into a fiscal-stress basket, z-scores on a 1,260-day rolling window, and bounds through tanh. A composite near plus one is sustained G10 sovereign stress. A composite near minus one is fiscal calm.
Why it matters
When developed-market sovereign bonds wobble, institutional portfolios reduce credit-sensitive exposure and rotate into gold as the ancient non-fiat store of value. The five-country panel captures the broad developed-world stress signal; single-country yield shocks are noise, basket-wide stress is the signal.
Fiscal-stress state above the plus 0.6 band has historically coincided with GLD forward returns well above baseline (+4.67 percent mean fwd 60d versus +2.55 percent baseline). Pair with US real-rate signals and USD strength signals for a complete gold-regime read.
During the 2022 UK gilt crisis the BOE intervened within days; the composite remained elevated but gold response was moderated as sovereign spreads compressed on intervention expectation. Fast central-bank response can decouple the stress signal from GLD reaction.
GO DEEPER
What the Gold Credit-Quality Composite signal actually tells you (and when it does not)
The brief covers the five-country sovereign-yield panel (UK, France, Italy, Japan, US), the stress-basket methodology, three signature episodes (2022-10 UK gilt crisis at series max, 2020-03 COVID yield volatility, 2019-08 compression series min), and four caveats on reading a G10-wide sovereign composite as a gold ETF signal. Includes regime-conditional forward returns and the 60-day horizon decomposition.
