SIGNAL OVERVIEW

La Nina conditions in the Pacific deliver dry weather to the South American corn belt — Brazilian Mato Grosso Safrinha and the Argentine Pampas — during the critical December through February growing window. When the Pacific Decadal Oscillation is simultaneously in its cool/negative phase, the La Nina signal is amplified: historical compound episodes (2007-2008, 2011-2012, 2020-2022) have delivered the sharpest South American crop-loss events of the modern record and anchored the biggest CBOT corn rallies.

The signal fires POSITIVE when both the NOAA Oceanic Nino Index drops below minus 0.5 AND NOAA PDO sits negative. Positive reads flag amplified South American supply risk; negative reads flag the mirror-image El Nino / warm-PDO regime where SA crop prospects are strong. The composite is a 3-6 month lead indicator; the SA crop effect of today’s pattern shows up in Q1-Q2 harvest data.

LIVE CHART

Thirty-six years of the compound La Nina + Negative PDO composite against CBOT corn forward returns.

What the chart is showing. The dark line in the top panel is the compound La Nina + PDO composite on a tanh-bounded plus-or-minus one scale — positive means a compound La Nina + Neg PDO regime (South American crop stress), negative means the mirror El Nino / Pos PDO regime. The bronze line in the middle panel is the CBOT corn front-month in cents per bushel. The bottom panel tracks the 252-day rolling information coefficient between the composite and corn 60-day forward returns. Dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.2 moderate and plus-or-minus 0.5 extreme thresholds.

STATE AND HISTORY

Composite -0.835, state Moderate NEG, 112 trading days running in the current phase. Per-state baselines in the regime table below.

THE CLIMATE AMPLIFIER MECHANISM

La Nina (ONI below minus 0.5) drives dry weather to Brazilian Safrinha and the Argentine Pampas during the Dec-Feb growing window. When PDO sits in its cool/negative phase, the La Nina effect is amplified — compound episodes (2007-08, 2011-12, 2020-22) delivered the sharpest SA crop-loss events of the modern record. Pure La Nina with warm PDO has muted effect; pure El Nino with cool PDO is mild bearish. The compound signal is the sharpest.

HOW TO POSITION

Climate-pattern lead signal with a 3-6 month horizon. Pair with the Corn Weather Drought Composite (observed US weather), CFTC Managed-Money positioning, and USDA WASDE flow. When all three align on direction, corn conviction is high.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at -0.835. Signal state is Moderate NEG, 112 trading days running. See the regime table below for per-state baselines.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE CLIMATE CALL

Composite -0.835, state Moderate NEG, 112 trading days running. Current direction and per-state baselines are in the regime table below.

THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT

Per-state forward returns show a clean monotone pattern in the regime table — La Nina + Neg PDO is the bullish extreme; El Nino / Pos PDO is the bearish extreme; Normal sits near baseline. Confirmed by independent-sample non-overlap IC.

THE HONEST CAVEAT

Climate signals have a long horizon — the South American crop effect of today’s pattern shows in Q1-Q2 harvest data 3-6 months out. Use as a regime-tilt overlay, not a short-horizon trade trigger.

What this measures

La Nina combined with a cool-phase Pacific Decadal Oscillation drives the sharpest dry-weather regimes across the Brazilian Safrinha and Argentine Pampas, the key South American corn belts. The composite reads NOAA ONI (3-month Nino 3.4 SST anomaly) and NOAA PDO (leading PCA mode of North Pacific SST), fires POSITIVE when ONI is below minus 0.5 AND PDO is negative, and bands at plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme).

Why it matters

Why compound La Nina plus negative PDO amplifies

Pure La Nina (ONI below -0.5) alone has modest and inconsistent effect on South American corn belts — some La Nina years deliver dryness, others do not. The Pacific Decadal Oscillation modulates the ENSO signal: when PDO is in its warm/positive phase, ENSO signals are damped; when PDO is in its cool/negative phase, ENSO signals are AMPLIFIED. Compound La Nina plus negative PDO episodes (2007-08, 2011-12, 2020-22) have delivered the sharpest SA crop-loss events of the modern record. The composite fires only on the compound condition, filtering out noisy pure-La-Nina or pure-PDO episodes.

Why Grade A with independent-sample confirmation

Daily Spearman IC plus 0.148 at p-value 3.6e-45 across 8,984 observations — strongly significant daily. Non-overlap rho plus 0.164 at p-value 0.045 across 150 independent samples — INDEPENDENTLY SIGNIFICANT (just below the strict 0.05 bar). 3.42 pp directional spread. All three Grade A gates passed.

How to use this signal today

Climate-pattern lead signal with 3-6 month horizon. Pair with the C Corn Weather Drought Composite signal (observed US weather, Grade A companion ship), C CFTC Managed-Money positioning, and USDA WASDE flow. When all three align on direction, corn conviction is high.
