OBJECTIVE

Argentina is the world’s third-largest corn exporter behind the US and Brazil, producing approximately 55-60 million metric tons annually with the Pampas region generating approximately 70 percent of total output. The Argentine corn growing season runs opposite the US , planting in September-October, pollination in December-January, grain fill in February, harvest March-May. The Pampas climate is the single most important determinant of global corn balance during December-February: when the Pampas is in drought during Argentine pollination, Argentine production collapses and global corn balance tightens dramatically. This signal fuses two satellite data sources that NASA and the US Climate Hazards Center publish in near-real-time with approximately 7-day operational lag: (1) CHIRPS rainfall across the Argentine Pampas corn/soy/wheat region computed as 90-day cumulative precipitation z-scored on a 15-year rolling window, and (2) SMAP soil moisture at the Pampas regional aggregate, z-scored on 5-year rolling window. Both are polarity-inverted (dry = positive signal, which maps to bullish-corn via Argentine supply reduction). The engine applies a PHENOLOGY-GATE multiplier: full weight during December-January-February peak pollination/grain-fill window, half weight during November-March shoulder, 0.3 base weight otherwise. An additional NOAA ONI amplifier adds minus 0.4 × tanh(ONI/1.5) to capture the La-Niña-dries-Pampas teleconnection. The satellite publication lag (SATELLITE_LAG_DAYS parameter) shifts both input series forward in time so the signal uses only data that was publicly available on each historical date , no look-ahead. Across 36 years of history, the empirical state-conditional corn fwd 60d pattern is cleanly directional and strongly significant. EXTREME_POS state (val above plus 0.5, Pampas drought during peak Argentine growing window) delivers mean corn fwd 60d of plus 8.51 percent (HAC Newey-West t plus 8.10, significant at 1 percent, 669 state-days). EXTREME_NEG state (val below minus 0.5, Pampas wet during peak window) delivers minus 4.04 percent (HAC t minus 7.29, significant at 1 percent, 1,316 state-days). Both tails are among the strongest standalone HAC-t values in the entire LOCKED corn portfolio. The signal reads minus 0.1907 as of October 23 2026 in NORMAL territory for 6 consecutive trading days at the 30.4 percentile. Current conditions reflect modest post-harvest Pampas moisture (mid-autumn Southern Hemisphere) with the phenology gate near-dormant since October is outside the peak Dec-Feb window. The next active-signal window begins approximately December 1 2026. The signal contributes 7.7 percent weight to the LOCKED corn portfolio v1_1 Layer 1 base sleeve with polarity sign plus one. Read on for the mechanism, the three signature historical cases, and the current reading in context.

WHY THE SIGNAL IS HERE

Argentine Pampas is in Southern Hemisphere autumn post-harvest; the phenology gate applies 0.3 base weight to the signal through October-November, meaning the current reading has limited information content.

POSTURE FOR THE WEEKS AHEAD

The signal will activate progressively from November 1 2026 (half-weight shoulder) through December 1 2026 (full-weight peak). The December 2026 – February 2027 window is the active signal window.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at -0.17 in the Pampas Neutral band. The signal is phenology-gated to the December-February Argentine summer growing window; current pre-season reading is approximately neutral drift. CBOT front-month corn (orange, right axis) sits near $4.48/bu.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite -0.17 State Pampas Neutral, moderate band. Pre-season drift from CHIRPS and SMAP October data; the biological peak window opens in December.
  • CHIRPS satellite precipitation + NASA SMAP soil moisture Composite of two independent remote-sensing data sources covering the Argentine Pampas corn-growing region. CHIRPS reads monthly rainfall; SMAP reads root-zone soil moisture.
  • IC vs CBOT corn fwd 60d: Spearman +0.246, p=1.3e-123 (N=8,984) Deeply significant positive IC. The strongest standalone signal in the LOCKED corn portfolio. Positive composite (Pampas drought) predicts positive corn fwd 60d via global supply tightening.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE ARGENTINE PAMPAS CHANNEL

Argentina is the world’s third-largest corn exporter. Its Pampas region grows corn through the Southern Hemisphere summer (planting September-October, pollination December-January, grain fill February, harvest March-May). Pampas climate is the single most consequential variable in Argentine corn production, and Argentine production directly impacts global corn balance via the export program. Severe Pampas droughts (2008-09, 2017-18, 2022-23) each cut Argentine corn production by approximately 25-40 percent year-over-year, tightening global balance and supporting US corn exports.

THE TWO-SATELLITE COMPOSITE DESIGN

The signal fuses rainfall (CHIRPS 90-day cumulative) and soil moisture (NASA SMAP) because the two measure different aspects of Pampas water balance. CHIRPS captures precipitation input over a 90-day window (slower-moving, climatological-anomaly tracker). SMAP captures soil moisture state at the current date (faster-moving, direct crop-stress-exposure indicator). The CHIRPS and SMAP z-scores are added with equal weight. The combined signal captures both the WATER-INPUT regime and the SOIL-STATE outcome.

THE PHENOLOGY GATE AND ONI AMPLIFIER

The engine multiplies the base composite by a phenology-aware gate: 1.0 during December-January-February peak pollination/grain-fill, 0.5 during November + March shoulder, 0.3 otherwise. This ensures the signal only fires strongly when Pampas conditions are agronomically-meaningful for Argentine corn production. The additional NOAA ONI amplifier (-tanh(ONI/1.5) * 0.4) captures the La-Niña-dries-Pampas teleconnection: during La Niña regimes, the signal receives a positive boost reflecting the known climatological pathway.

What this measures

The engine queries CHIRPS Regional Daily rainfall for region `ARGENTINA_PAMPAS_SOY_WHEAT` from the weather database. Computes 90-day cumulative rainfall. Z-scores on 15-year rolling window with 3-year minimum. Polarity-inverts (`drought_z = -rain_z` so dry maps to positive). Separately queries SMAP Regional Daily soil moisture for the same Pampas region, z-scores on 5-year rolling window, polarity-inverts. Applies satellite publication-lag shift (SATELLITE_LAG_DAYS parameter adds this many days to the index of each input before reindexing to backtest dates , removes look-ahead on near-real-time satellite data). Combines CHIRPS drought-z plus SMAP drought-z (equal weight). Applies phenology-window multiplier: 1.0 during Dec-Jan-Feb peak, 0.5 during Nov + Mar shoulder, 0.3 otherwise. Adds NOAA ONI amplifier (`-tanh(ONI/1.5) * 0.4` , La Niña contributes positively to the composite). Multiplies by HMM regime amplifier engine data (optional). Clipped and tanh-bounded. Five-state machine on the final the primary composite.
