OBJECTIVE

CME Live Cattle futures trade across multiple contract months — front month (L1), second-nearby (L2), third-nearby (L3), and sixth-nearby (L6). The relationship between these contracts carries forward-supply information. When deferred months trade at a PREMIUM to the front month (CONTANGO), the market expects supply to be plentiful forward relative to current demand. When deferred months trade at a DISCOUNT to the front (BACKWARDATION), the market expects supply to be tight forward or demand to be firm. This signal reads the full term curve composite — the average spread of L2, L3, and L6 contracts versus L1 — z-scored on a 504-day rolling window with 60-day minimum sample, bounded by tanh. Positive composite reads CONTANGO (deferred premium = bearish forward LC via plentiful supply expectation). Negative composite reads BACKWARDATION (deferred discount = bullish forward LC via tight supply expectation). State thresholds at plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Daily release cadence. The memorable finding: this is the STRONGEST-IC directional signal in the LC fundamental stack. Daily Spearman IC against LC fwd60d is -0.400 at p-value essentially zero across 9,049 observations. Non-overlapping (every-60-day) IC is p ~ 0 at p-value essentially zero across 150 independent samples — INDEPENDENTLY significant. Phase +1 (Contango) delivers -2.26% fwd60d (-3.28 pp edge below baseline, 150+ bp headwind). Phase -1 (Backwardation) delivers +4.30% fwd60d (+3.28 pp edge, hit 65%+). Phase 0 (Normal) delivers +1.08% fwd60d. Grade A directional signal. Current reading: Backwardation EXTREME NEG firing at composite -0.738. The term curve is deeply inverted. Historical Phase -1 delivers meaningfully above baseline. Read on for the current reading, the 2019 pre-ASF backwardation anchor, the 2003 pre-BSE contango anchor, and how to pair with the LC fundamental stack.

STATE AND HISTORY

Backwardation EXTREME NEG firing, 30 days running. Phase -1 historically delivers mean fwd60d LC +4.30%, +3.28 pp above baseline. Phase +1 (Contango) delivers -2.26% / -3.28 pp below baseline. 5.5+ pp directional spread.

THE TERM-STRUCTURE MECHANISM

Contango = deferred-month premium = market expects supply plentiful forward = bearish forward LC. Backwardation = deferred discount = market expects supply tight forward = bullish forward LC. The curve embeds the market consensus on forward supply via inter-month spreads.

HOW TO POSITION

Pair with LC-corn ratio, FC-LC spread, cattle inventory, slaughter YoY. Term structure is the strongest-IC directional anchor; use as primary direction read for high-conviction positioning.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at -0.738 in the Backwardation EXTREME NEG band. The blue signal line has moved below the -0.5 extreme threshold as the CME LC term curve deeply inverted. CME Live Cattle (orange) has traded in the \$220-230 range. Historical Backwardation firings precede meaningful LC strength.

Backwardation — pre-ASF tight-supply pricing
Backwardation saturated-negative through Q3 2019 at composite -0.97. The LC curve was deeply inverted as the market priced tight forward supply from the pre-ASF global protein rebalancing and multi-year herd contraction. Live cattle were at \$94. Over the next 60 trading days LC rallied 28 percent to \$120 as the backwardated curve resolved into cash strength.

Contango — pre-BSE supply-plentiful pricing
Contango saturated-positive through Q4 2003 at composite +0.99. The LC curve was deeply contangoed as the market priced plentiful forward supply. Live cattle were at \$103. Over the next 60 trading days LC fell 27 percent to \$75 as the December 2003 BSE discovery compounded the already-weak forward pricing.
LC@start \$103; fwd60d -27%; composite +0.99; pre-BSE.

Backwardation — 2014 drought-tightened supply
Backwardation firing through Q3 2014 as the 2011-2012 drought liquidation and subsequent herd contraction pushed the curve into deep inversion. Live cattle rallied through Q4 2014 to cycle highs over \$170. The backwardated curve correctly anticipated the structural supply tightness that persisted through 2014-2015.

Scroll inside the table for the full history. Forward 60-day LC is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.

What this measures

The signal pulls CME Live Cattle individual contract month closes (L1 front, L2 second-nearby, L3 third-nearby, L6 sixth-nearby) from CSI continuous data, computes the average spread of (L2 + L3 + L6) / 3 versus L1, z-scores on a 504-day rolling window with 60-day minimum sample, and bounds with tanh. State thresholds plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Daily release.

Why it matters

Why term structure reads market consensus on forward supply

CME Live Cattle futures trade across multiple contract months. The inter-month spreads embed the market consensus on forward supply and demand. When deferred months trade at a premium to the front (contango), the market collectively expects supply to be plentiful forward relative to current demand. When deferred months trade at a discount (backwardation), the market expects supply to be tight forward or demand to be firm. The full-curve composite (L2/L3/L6 vs L1 average) captures this consensus across the near-forward horizon.

Why Grade A — strongest-IC in the LC stack

Daily Spearman IC against LC fwd60d is -0.400 at p-value < 1e-100 across 9,049 observations. Non-overlapping (every-60d) independence test at p-value < 1e-7 across 150 independent samples with IC p ~ 0. BOTH significant. Phase +1 (Contango) delivers -3.28 pp below baseline, Phase -1 (Backwardation) delivers +3.28 pp above baseline. 6.5+ pp directional spread. This is the strongest-IC directional signal in the LC fundamental stack.

How to use this signal today

Pair with the LC-corn ratio signal (feedlot-margin primary driver), FC-LC spread (replacement-cost), cattle inventory (longest-lead structural supply), slaughter YoY (realized flow). Term structure is the primary directional anchor for high-conviction positioning. When term structure, LC-corn ratio, and cattle inventory all agree, direction is high-conviction.
