LH Front-Second Basis

The CME Lean Hogs curve carries two prices every trading day — the front month and the one directly behind it. The gap between them is the most listened-to supply tell in the pork complex, and when measured correctly it points the way the mechanism predicts.

CME settles the Lean Hogs curve every trading afternoon, so this signal refreshes nightly…

As of Oct 29, 2026. Updated nightly.

OBJECTIVE

Every afternoon at 1pm Chicago time, CME settles the Lean Hogs futures curve. Twelve contract months are listed out, each with a settlement price. The two that matter most for this signal are the front month (the contract closest to expiration) and the second month (the one directly behind it). The gap between them is called the front-second basis, and the shape of that gap carries more information about current pork supply conditions than almost any other single number the market produces.

When the second month is trading above the front month — called contango — the market is paying a premium for forward delivery. That usually means current physical supply is comfortable or glutted, and traders are willing to pay up to lock in delivery further out. When the front is trading above the second — backwardation — the market is paying a premium for right-now pork. That usually means current physical supply is tight.

This signal takes the daily settlement prices on the first- and second-nearby CME Lean Hogs contracts, computes the front-second difference, standardizes it against trailing history so we know what counts as a "wide" or "narrow" shape for this specific curve, and bounds the result with a tanh transform so one headline-driven afternoon cannot pin the series to an outlier.

Here is where I owe you an honesty note. Yesterday’s version of this page said that wide contango — a positive signal reading — historically preceded a BULLISH move on Lean Hogs, which runs against physical intuition. I explained that the empirical back-test showed the opposite of the naive "wide contango equals bearish glut" story. That was wrong, and the reason it was wrong is that the back-test was measured against a nominal front-nearby price series that is corrupted by contract-roll gaps. When we re-ran the back-test against the proper back-adjusted tradable return — the price series a real futures trader would actually experience — the sign flipped back to what the mechanism predicts. Wide contango is bearish for forward Lean Hogs. The "mechanism-opposite" narrative was a measurement artifact of the roll-corrupted series, not a real feature of pork market behavior.

So this signal’s polarity is now -1 (not +1 as yesterday). Positive signal readings correspond to wide contango, which correspond to a sized bearish lean on forward tradable Lean Hogs returns. The clean back-test shows that readings in the wide-contango band (currently 41.9% of trading days historically) deliver an average fwd60d return of -1.50% on the tradable series, versus a baseline of +0.43% mean (median -0.22%) across all days. That is an edge of about -1.9 percentage points below baseline — modest, real, and consistent with the physical mechanism. Wide-backwardation days (36.6% of history) deliver an average fwd60d of +1.01% — a +0.6 percentage point edge above baseline on the bullish side. The spread between the two tails is about 2.5 percentage points. Smaller than yesterday’s reported number, but honestly measured.

LIVE CHART

34 years of the LH front-second curve shape, read as the anchor supply lens.

The blue line is this signal reading on the left axis. The orange line is Lean Hogs futures (the thing you care about) on the right axis. The pattern to watch for is blue-line pushes above +0.5 — those are the moments the curve has moved into wide contango and the historical record says a bearish-LH forward tends to follow over the next three months. Today the blue line is at +0.63, in that positive band, three trading days running since 2026-10-27.

READING

+0.628, deep in Wide Contango, three days running. The CME Lean Hogs curve is in strong contango — second-month trading at a meaningful premium to the front — and the signal is now giving a sized bearish lean on forward Lean Hogs tradable returns under the corrected polarity.

WHY IT MATTERS

Front-second curve shape is the most information-dense supply read in the Lean Hogs complex, and after the 2026-10-30 benchmark correction, the sign aligns with the physical mechanism (wide contango = supply glut = bearish). Wide-contango days have averaged -1.50% fwd60d on the tradable series versus a baseline of +0.43% — a modest ~1.9pp edge below baseline, honest and significant.

POSTURE

Bearish lean from this signal. It is now the 50% anchor of the LH Supply Census Composite — the largest input — so this reading is pulling the composite’s blended view meaningfully bearish today. Act on the composite reading, with the understanding that this component is doing most of the composite’s talking right now.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.628 in the EXTREME POS band — deep in wide-contango territory. Historically this band has delivered an average 60-day forward return of about 5.5 percent on Lean Hogs versus 1.7 percent on an average day — a lift of roughly 3.9 percentage points. The signal just crossed in 3 trading days ago; historical EXT POS runs tend to persist several weeks.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite +0.628 State Wide contango; signal in act-mode with sized bullish-LH lean. Anchor 45% weight in LH Supply Census Composite.
  • Raw z-score +0.65 Standardized front-second CME Lean Hogs curve spread, tanh-bounded. Positive = back-month premium = contango.
  • Phase just crossed on 2026-10-27 Historical EXT POS runs persist several weeks. 60-day forward return mean +5.1% vs +2.6% baseline on days this positive.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A VIEW ON LEAN HOGS

The curve is giving a sized bearish lean today, and because this signal is the 50% anchor of the LH Supply Census Composite, it is doing most of the composite’s talking. If your view on Lean Hogs is bearish — coming from slaughter counts, cold storage, basis, or anything else — the curve is in your corner. If your view is bullish, the curve is actively disagreeing with you through the largest input in the composite, and the disagreement is coming from the correct mechanism direction (wide contango → supply comfort → price softness). The signal is not asking you to abandon your view; it is asking you to size appropriately given the anchor is pulling the other way.

HOW TO TRADE THIS SIGNAL

As the anchor of the composite, not standalone. This signal now carries 50% of the LH Supply Census Composite’s weight — the largest allocation of any single input after the November 2026 three-member rebuild. Today’s +0.628 reading is pulling the composite meaningfully in a bearish direction, and the composite is what you would consider acting on. On its own, this signal has a modest ~1.9pp fwd60d edge below baseline in its wide-contango band — real, but not a slam-dunk short entry. The signal earns its anchor weight by being clean, high-frequency, and mechanism-consistent, not by delivering an outsized standalone edge.

THE REGIME MAP

The three states, forward returns and sample share

Three bands sit on this signal, measured against the CME Lean Hogs back-adjusted tradable return. Wide Contango (currently 41.9% of trading days, today’s band) corresponds to a positive signal reading and an average fwd60d of -1.50% on Lean Hogs — about -1.9 percentage points below the baseline of +0.43% mean (median -0.22%). Normal (21.5% of days) sits in the middle at -0.37% fwd60d. Wide Backwardation (36.6% of days) delivers +1.01% fwd60d — about +0.6 percentage points above baseline. The spread between the two outer tails is about 2.5 percentage points. The physical mechanism and the empirical fit now agree: when the curve pays up for forward delivery, current supply is comfortable, and prices tend to drift softly over the next three months.

Thresholds are tuned on the historical distribution of standardized front-second curve spreads back to 1992. Band breakpoints are expressed in units of the bounded z-score. Positive values correspond to contango (back-month premium) and bullish-LH forward returns; negative values correspond to backwardation (front-month premium).

Forward 60-day LH is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. What this measures

We watch one shape: the price gap between the front-month and second-month CME Lean Hogs futures contracts. We take their daily settlement prices, compute the difference, and standardize that difference against a trailing history so we know what counts as a wide or tight curve for THIS specific market — not for crude oil, not for corn, just for Lean Hogs. Then we bound the result with a tanh transform so one headline-driven afternoon cannot pin the series to an outlier. The intuition the mechanism makes: curve shape is a direct read on how the market is pricing physical supply conditions today versus a few weeks from now. Wide contango means the market is paying up for forward delivery, which usually points to a comfortable or glutted present-day supply. Wide backwardation means the market is paying up for right-now pork, which usually points to current physical tightness. The empirical twist is that in Lean Hogs specifically, wide contango historically precedes modest rallies, not declines — the curve tends to telegraph supply conditions at their softest point, right before they firm.

Why it matters

Why Lean Hogs traders should care

If you trade Lean Hogs you already watch the front month. This signal asks a different question: how does the front month relate to the one directly behind it? Curve shape is where the pork market shows its hand on supply conditions, because the people writing those settlement prices are commercial hedgers and merchant traders who have to physically move pigs through the system. When the back month trades at a premium to the front, the people closest to the physical supply chain are signaling they expect current comfort to continue, and historically that comfort has mean-reverted into firmer prices rather than further declines. It is one of the most liquid, most frequently updated, and most information-dense readings in the entire livestock complex.

How to use this signal today

It is giving a sized bullish-LH lean right now. Reading is +0.63, state is EXTREME POS, which is the strongest positive band this signal produces. Historically, this band has delivered an average 60-day forward return of about 5.5 percent on Lean Hogs versus 1.7 percent on an average day — an edge of roughly 3.9 percentage points, which is real and statistically meaningful. The signal just crossed into this band three trading days ago, and historical EXT POS runs tend to persist for several weeks, so the composite is likely to carry this bullish tilt for a while. If you were already looking at Lean Hogs from the long side, this signal is in your corner.

The honest limitation

The edge is a tailwind, not a trigger. A 3.9 percentage point lift above baseline over 60 days is a real and statistically significant improvement, but it is not a slam-dunk long entry on its own — on any given day in the EXT POS band, there is still meaningful dispersion in what happens next. The signal also runs against the "obvious" supply-glut interpretation, which means readers who want to size on gut instinct about curve shape will often come to the opposite conclusion. That is why the signal lives inside the LH Supply Census Composite as the anchor rather than being traded standalone — it earns its 45 percent weight because the empirical fit is strong and significant, but it works best when the other three composite members are confirming the direction.
