Live Cattle & Feeder Cattle News

A reading expressed in standard deviations relative to its own trailing baseline. A +2σ reading sits two standard deviations above the recent mean; -2σ, two below. Statistically about 1 observation in 20 lands outside ±2σ in a normal distribution, so sigma readings in that range usually mark the edge of normal behavior and the start of actionable regime shifts.

WoW compares to the prior week. MoM, the prior month. QoQ, the prior quarter. YoY, the same calendar period one year ago.

YoY controls for seasonality and holiday effects, which matter for cattle because grilling-season weeks (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and November/December roast-pull weeks are structurally busier than the trough weeks in between. A number that looks big WoW but flat YoY is usually a calendar effect, not a trend break.

USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) publishes a daily list of federally-inspected meat and poultry establishments, with each flagged “active” or “inactive”. An “inactive” flip on a slaughter plant usually means FSIS has pulled inspectors because the plant has halted production — the earliest external signal of a capacity-affecting event.

Not every inactive flag is a hazard; some are planned maintenance pauses or inspector-availability gaps. Pair the flag with the “last flip” column and recent news coverage in the plant row to tell operational halts from administrative gaps.

The most recent calendar date the plant’s FSIS active flag changed state (from active to inactive, or vice versa). Watch this column alongside news coverage: a flip without news is a surveillance signal; a flip paired with news is confirmation. A plant that has not flipped in months is operating normally.

WOAH (formerly OIE) is the intergovernmental body that sets global animal-health standards. Member countries report notifiable disease events through WAHIS, WOAH’s event tracking system. Reports typically move through three stages: initial (first notification), follow-up (ongoing status update), and final (closed-out event).

For cattle, the market-moving reports are FMD, BSE, lumpy skin disease, bluetongue, EHD, bovine tuberculosis, and — in the historical register — rinderpest.

A highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, pigs, sheep, goats). Not a food-safety issue for humans but a trade-shutdown event: a WOAH-notified FMD detection in the US would trigger immediate import bans on US beef by essentially every major buyer. The US has been FMD-free since 1929.

The 2001 UK outbreak killed over 6 million animals in a controlled cull and shut down British beef exports for the better part of a year. The Taiwan 1997 pig outbreak nearly wiped out their export industry overnight.

The live cattle futures price divided by the corn futures price. A direct read on cost-of-gain pressure in the feedlot.

• Stress band, below 32. Corn is expensive relative to fed cattle. Feedlots lose money per head, placements slow, and the fed-cattle pipeline tightens six to nine months out.
• Normal band, 32 to 48. Feed cost is manageable. Feedlot margins hover around breakeven and the fed-cattle supply curve stays roughly on trend.
• Fat margin band, above 48. Cattle rich relative to feed. Feedlots pay up for replacement feeders, placements accelerate, and fed-cattle supply builds six to twelve months out.

Bands are anchored to the 2020+ regime because cattle has structurally repriced relative to corn since the 2020 COVID packing dislocation and the 2024 US cowherd low. Historical anchors still apply directionally: the 2008 ethanol boom pushed the ratio below 18 for months and drove the US beef cow herd into multi-year liquidation; the 2014 to 2015 window held the ratio above 40 and the herd expanded aggressively, setting up the oversupply of 2016.

The feeder cattle futures price minus the live cattle futures price. Measures what the feedlot is willing to pay for a light calf relative to the eventual finished cattle it will become.

• Feeder stretched. Z-score at or above +2. Spread wide. Feedlots paying up for replacements, usually because feeder supply is tight (drought culled calves, Mexican imports blocked, or feedlot pens empty).
• Feeder discount. Z-score at or below -2. Spread narrow. Feeders can’t move; cost-of-gain pressure or packer bid weakness has stopped feedlots from pulling replacements.
• Normal band. Between -2 and +2. Spread tracking seasonal cost-of-gain economics.

Watch this with LC-corn above. A high LC-corn ratio paired with a wide FC – LC spread is the classic “fat margin, feeder bid strong” expansion setup.

The dollar difference between the Choice-grade boxed beef cutout and the Select-grade cutout. A grading-mix and demand-tier signal, not purely a supply read.

• Choice premium rich. Spread above $25. Retail demand pulling the higher grade; feedlot carcass-quality mix running Choice-heavy. Classic grilling-season setup.
• Normal band. $5 to $25. Grade-mix tracking seasonal norm.
• Grade-mix tight. Spread below $5. Choice supply ample relative to retail demand, Select discount small. Can mark the top of a cutout rally.

The spread also widens mechanically late in the summer when yearling cattle carry more marbling, and narrows in late winter when cold-weight cattle grade off.

Choice boxed beef cutout minus the dressed-weight equivalent of 5-area cash cattle. The simplest read on gross packer margin per head. A more rigorous version adjusts by drop credit (hide + offal) and fab yield; this proxy tracks direction cleanly.

• Fat packer margin. Proxy above $120. Packer kill rate stays elevated and the kill-cut risk to live cattle is low. Cutout can lead for a few more weeks.
• Normal band. $30 to $120. Range-trading margin.
• Compressed, bull cash. Proxy below $30. Packer “kill-cut” risk real. Expect reduced kills in weeks ahead; cash cattle bids strengthen as fewer pens clear.

Thresholds are anchored to the post-2020 regime. Historically the proxy has blown out above $400 (COVID 2020 plant shutdowns) and collapsed to near zero in the depths of 2015. Both regimes resolved to normal within six months.

Federally-inspected cattle head count for the week ending Saturday, published by USDA NASS the following Thursday at 3:00 PM ET. The cleanest weekly read on packer throughput.

WoW compares to prior week; YoY compares to the same calendar week prior year, which controls for holiday and seasonality effects. A kill meaningfully below year-ago usually ties to a plant halt, a cattle-pull slowdown, or an exceptional margin compression. Above year-ago often reflects pulled-forward kills ahead of a holiday or packer margin fatness.

Managed money net long or short position in CME Live Cattle futures from the CFTC Commitments of Traders report. Positive means spec funds are net long; negative means net short.

Watch the direction of change more than the level. A sharp week-over-week shift (WoW large negative or positive) often precedes a futures move the following session as positioning catches up.

Managed money net position in CME Feeder Cattle futures. Smaller open interest than Live Cattle; a thinner CoT. Position shifts can trigger outsized next-day futures moves because the book is less deep.

Monthly count of cattle in US feedlots with 1,000+ head capacity, as of the first of the month, published by USDA NASS around the 22nd at 3:00 PM ET. The anchor supply number for the placements-to-marketings balance.

YoY of the inventory tells the structural story: above year-ago means supply is building in the pipeline; below year-ago means supply is tightening six to nine months out as placed cattle march to slaughter.

A fatal neurodegenerative prion disease of cattle, popularly called “mad cow disease.” The 2003 Washington state detection triggered an immediate Japan, Korea, and Taiwan import ban on US beef and sent nearby Live Cattle futures limit-down for multiple sessions.

Modern surveillance detects mostly “atypical” BSE, which arises spontaneously in older cattle and does not carry the same food-safety profile. Market reaction to atypical cases is smaller but can still move futures on headline risk.

A viral disease of cattle marked by firm nodules across the skin. Spread by biting flies and ticks. Not a food-safety issue but a trade-restriction trigger: WOAH reports typically prompt importing countries to pause live cattle and sometimes beef imports from the affected country.

The 2016 to 2020 LSD outbreak that spread through southeastern Europe shut down regional cattle trade for over a year. More recent outbreaks in central Asia and South Asia track similarly.

A bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. Spores can lie dormant in soil for decades and emerge after heavy rain or flooding, which is why North American anthrax clusters are usually small, localized, and seasonal rather than epidemic.

US detections rarely move Live Cattle futures but can trigger regional pasture quarantines and short-term feeder cattle supply pullbacks in the affected states.

A midge-borne viral disease of ruminants. More severe in sheep than cattle, but widespread outbreaks in Europe periodically trigger trade restrictions. Rarely a direct Live Cattle futures mover, more often a feeder-flow story.

A midge-borne viral disease of white-tailed deer and cattle. Severe outbreaks can cause localized cattle mortality in the US Southeast and Midwest. First reportable to USDA APHIS; rarely drives futures but worth monitoring in dry-fall windows when midge activity peaks.

Chronic bacterial infection of cattle caused by Mycobacterium bovis. US detections trigger herd testing requirements and interstate cattle movement restrictions in the affected zone. Rarely moves CME futures outright but can disrupt feeder cattle flow out of affected regions.

A historically devastating cattle plague, officially declared eradicated by WOAH and FAO in 2011. Any new WOAH detection would be a true black-swan trade event. Current reports typically involve laboratory stocks or historical records.

H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in US dairy cattle for the first time in March 2024. Spread via lactating-herd movement rather than migratory birds. Milk-production depressions in affected herds, trade restrictions on US dairy exports to some countries, and ongoing cattle-interstate testing requirements.

Direct futures impact has been modest; relevance to Live Cattle is mostly via cross-protein consumer substitution (eg from poultry when poultry prices spike on HPAI depopulation) rather than cattle supply itself.

A parasitic fly whose larvae feed on living cattle wounds. Eradicated from the US in 1966 via sterile-insect release but still endemic south of the Darien Gap. Northward expansion into Mexico in 2023-2024 triggered a US import suspension on live cattle from affected states, cutting Mexican feeder cattle flow and spiking Feeder Cattle futures.

APHIS maintains a sterile-fly barrier in the Darien region of Panama. A failure of the barrier is a tail risk for the US feeder supply chain, which depends on roughly 1 million head/year of Mexican imports.
