Napkin Math

Let’s run the numbers.

The arithmetic

Rough estimate

Calves per cow lifetime ~4.5
Finished steer weight 1,400 lbs
Carcass yield (dressing percentage) ~70%
Retail beef yield from carcass ~70%
Retail beef per calf 1,400 × 0.7 × 0.7 = 686 lbs
Lifetime retail beef 4.5 × 686 = 3,090 lbs
Beef per Big Mac (two 1.6 oz patties) 0.2 lb
Big Mac burgers per lifetime 3,090 ÷ 0.2
Burgers per cow 15,450
D

The answerAbout 15,000 Big Macs over one mother cow’s six-year productive life. One cow, five calves, fifteen thousand burgers. That is the biological throughput the cattle cycle is built around.

Why this matters

The scene is one mother cow. The market is the ten-year cycle.

Fifteen thousand Big Macs across a six-year productive life sounds like a lot. It is a lot, until you divide by population. US ground beef consumption runs roughly 8.5 billion pounds a year, or about 34 billion Big Mac burgers. Produced one mother cow at a time, that is roughly two million mother cows working their full lives just to cover America’s ground-beef demand, and the US beef cow herd is only 28 million.

This slow throughput is why the US cattle cycle runs 10 to 12 years, the longest cyclical rhythm of any major livestock commodity. The arithmetic from the napkin repeats at scale: nine months of gestation, fifteen to eighteen months to breeding weight, four to five years of productive breeding. A rancher deciding today to expand the herd puts the first marginal retail beef into the supply chain roughly three years from now, and reaches full production in six.

The 2024 US beef cow herd was the smallest since 1951. Peak was 1975. That is 49 years of net decline. Biology sets the ceiling on how fast the herd can rebuild, not economics. We have been calling the structural bull for three years and will keep calling it until the heifer retention data turns.

Randy Blach, CattleFax, 2024 industry outlook

The practical trader implication: Live Cattle is the slowest-moving major commodity future. The LC-corn ratio dominates feedlot placement decisions on a six-month horizon, but the cow-calf herd-rebuild signal operates on a five-year horizon. Short-term supply shocks (COVID, plant fires, screwworm border closures) move LC in days. Structural supply inflections move LC across years. Both regimes matter; the ten-year cycle is the backdrop for everything else.

The question is a thought experiment. The ten-year cycle is a trader’s calendar.
