Napkin Math

Let’s run the numbers.

The arithmetic

Rough estimate

Sow bred today October 21, 2026
Gestation (3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days) 115 days
Farrow-to-finish (~6 months) 180 days
Total breeding-to-market 115 + 180 = 295 days
Projected packer-floor date 2026-10-21 + 295 days
Packer-floor date August 12, 2027
B

The answerAbout August 12, 2027. The dog days of midsummer, when the piglets born in February go to market as 285-lb hogs. The 295-day lag is why the quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report predicts Lean Hog prices nearly a year forward.

Why this matters

The scene is a calendar. The market is the Hogs and Pigs Report.

Three months, three weeks, three days plus six months. Those are the two numbers that write the quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report into the Lean Hog futures curve. USDA-NASS publishes the report in March, June, September, and December. It breaks out total inventory, market hogs by weight class, breeding-herd inventory, farrowings (sows actually bred during the quarter), and the kept-for-breeding line.

The kept-for-breeding line is the signal. When kept-for-breeding ticks up, those sows will produce piglets 115 days later, which will reach market 180 days after that. Mark your calendar roughly ten months out. That is when the supply hits the cutout. The breeding-herd line moves Lean Hog futures more than the total-inventory line does because the lag is forward-looking.

Every retail trader watches the headline total inventory number in Hogs and Pigs. Every professional trader watches the kept-for-breeding number. The headline is lagging. The kept-for-breeding is leading. Ten months leading.

Steve Meyer, Partners for Production Agriculture, paraphrased from Hogs & Pigs commentary

For a Lean Hogs trader, the practical implication is that four Fridays a year, the Hogs and Pigs Report drops after the close, and the breeding-herd number sets the LH curve’s slope for the next ten months. Everything else — cutout, cash hogs, hog-corn ratio, packer margin, export flow — moves within that curve. The 295-day lag is the market’s internal clock.

The question is a thought experiment. The August 12, 2027 date is a trader’s reminder that pork is a biological lag market, and the calendar is the signal.
