Napkin Math

Let’s run the numbers.

The arithmetic

Rough estimate

Tar Heel daily throughput 30,000 hogs
Shifts per day 2 shifts, ~16 hours active
Active line time per day 16 × 3,600 = 57,600 seconds
Hogs per second 30,000 ÷ 57,600 = 0.52
Time per hog 57,600 ÷ 30,000
Seconds per hog ~1.9
D

The answerAbout one hog every two seconds. Thirty thousand a day. A single Tar Heel shift processes more pigs than exist in the entire state of Rhode Island. The largest slaughterhouse on the planet runs at this rate, every workday of the year.

Why this matters

The scene is a stopwatch. The market is single-plant risk.

Tar Heel is the top-of-stack in a US pork industry defined by plant-level concentration. The top 10 US pork plants together kill roughly 70% of US hogs. The flagship facilities — Smithfield Tar Heel NC, Smithfield Sioux Falls SD, Tyson Waterloo IA, JBS Beardstown IL — each run between 18,000 and 32,000 head a day, with Tar Heel at the top of the stack. When any of them goes down, 1 to 3 percent of national daily slaughter goes with it.

The record is unambiguous. April 2020, three plants closed within a single week during the first COVID wave: Smithfield Sioux Falls, Tyson Waterloo, JBS Marshalltown. Fifteen percent of national daily slaughter went offline for weeks. Pork cutout hit record highs while Lean Hog futures collapsed, the largest packer-margin blowout in the market’s history.

Tar Heel has not had a comparable multi-week outage, but it has had single-day shutdowns from ammonia leaks, labor walkouts, and Hurricane Florence in 2018. Each one is a one-percent-of-national-slaughter event in a day. The futures market prices these within hours when they are visible.

USDA-AMS, National Daily Pork Slaughter Report, 2020 to 2024

For a Lean Hogs trader, the practical implication is that plant-level news is market news. The USDA-AMS daily pork slaughter report (NW_LS409) tracks federally-inspected hog slaughter and is the single best real-time capacity signal. Any unexpected daily drop of 5% or more is a plant-level event worth tracking down. Smithfield is owned by China’s WH Group since the 2013 $4.7 billion acquisition, which also makes Tar Heel a cross-border political surface during US-China trade cycles.

The question is a thought experiment. The 1.9 seconds is a trader’s refresh rate on how fast the industrial machine runs.
