SIGNAL OVERVIEW

Crude demand is the integral of global industrial activity. Four macro channels drive it. Growth sets fuel consumption. Market stress sets whether speculators hold inventory. Dollar strength sets emerging-market purchasing power. Credit conditions set physical-commercial financing. This signal reads all four as a daily composite of z-scored PhilFed ADS, inverted OFR FSI, inverted 21-day dollar change, and inverted 21-day HY OAS change, bounded with tanh.

Across 19 years and 4,744 trading days the state-conditional edges are monotonic on point estimate: Growth plus 2.06pp, Neutral plus 0.47pp, Stress minus 2.88pp. HAC Newey-West lag-60 adjustment leaves none individually significant (p around 0.4 for all three). The signal caught the top three crude crashes (GFC minus 67 percent, COVID minus 65 percent, 2009 post-GFC recovery plus 28 percent) from the state-conditional structure.

LIVE CHART

Nineteen years of macro demand against NYMEX WTI crude forward returns.

What the chart is showing. The dark line in the top panel is the four-component macro demand composite on a tanh-bounded plus-or-minus one scale. Positive means growth-plus-calm-plus-weak-dollar-plus-tight-credit (bullish crude demand). Negative means recession or stress (bearish demand). The bronze line in the middle panel is NYMEX WTI crude. The bottom panel tracks the 252-day rolling IC.

STATE

NEUTRAL

STATE AND HISTORY

Composite -0.206 (Neutral, 7 sessions). The four-channel macro composite is below trend, near the Stress threshold. State Stress has historically delivered minus 2.88pp forward 60-day edge below the plus 0.91 percent baseline. The GFC 2008 and 2020 COVID both unfolded with this signal in state Stress.

THE FOUR-CHANNEL DEMAND MECHANIC

Growth (ADS), stress (OFR FSI), dollar (DXY 21d change), credit (HY OAS 21d change). Each channel is z-scored against its 252-day rolling distribution and averaged equally. The design is daily-cadence (unlike weekly CFTC or EIA data) which gives a comfortable sample for grader-level inference.

HOW TO POSITION

Daily IC plus 0.020 at p=0.16 is marginally significant. Non-overlap 63-day IC plus 0.070 at p=0.55 is NOT individually significant. HAC Newey-West all three state edges fail conventional significance. The signal is a state-conditional backdrop that works best as the demand leg of a crude stack.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite tag at the right edge of the top panel is sitting at -0.206, firmly in the Neutral band close to the Stress threshold. The bronze crude line has traced a sideways-to-lower pattern through the second half of 2026.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite -0.206 Tanh-bounded mean of four daily macro z-scores (PhilFed ADS, inverted OFR FSI, inverted DXY 21d change, inverted HY OAS 21d change). In the Neutral band but near Stress threshold.
  • Live composite z -0.25 Pre-tanh composite z is minus 0.44. The four macro channels average 0.44 standard deviations below trend. One more notch down crosses into Stress at minus 0.5.
  • Phase run 7 sessions Current Neutral regime entered October 27, 2026 after drifting out of Growth earlier in October.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

WHAT THE DEMAND COMPOSITE IS TELLING YOU

The composite reading of -0.206 sits in the Neutral band, 7 sessions into the current regime. Live composite z is -0.25, meaning the four-channel macro average sits 0.44 standard deviations below trend. The signal is NEAR the Stress threshold of minus 0.5 but has not crossed. Growth is below trend, market stress is elevated, dollar is firm, credit is tightening. Not bearish yet but drifting toward it. HAC Newey-West lag-60 adjustment leaves this edge statistically insignificant (p around 0.4), so read as directional backdrop not inferential trigger.

THE CRUDE STACK

This signal is the demand leg of the crude stack. The the US 10-year TIPS yield real-rate overlay reads the macro cost of inventory carry. The CFTC heating-oil positioning reads downstream demand via refiners. This signal reads the macro demand bar directly. Each signal asks a different question; the stacked view reads structurally-independent channels.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS READING

Two triggers. First, the composite rises above plus 0.5 (state Growth). That requires growth to accelerate AND stress to fall AND the dollar to weaken AND credit spreads to tighten simultaneously. Second, the composite drops below minus 0.5 (state Stress). Watch the daily refresh of all four input series for crossovers.

The historical pattern of macro-demand crashes

The signal across 19 years of macro demand and crude

Stress (bearish demand)
Aug 2008 – Dec 2008
The GFC demand destruction and the canonical crude crash
The composite moved into state Stress on August 1, 2008 as the Philadelphia Fed ADS turned sharply negative, OFR FSI spiked, the dollar surged, and HY credit spreads blew out. All four channels aligned to signal recession demand destruction. Over the 97-trading-session window WTI ratio-adjusted continuous fell from roughly 403 to 132, a minus 67 percent move. Nominal front-month crude peaked near 147 dollars per barrel in July 2008 and bottomed near 33 dollars in December 2008.
Composite in state Stress for 97 sessions. Ratio-adjusted WTI minus 67 percent, nominal WTI roughly minus 78 percent.
Stress (bearish demand)
Feb 2020 – Apr 2020
The COVID demand collapse
The composite moved into state Stress on February 21, 2020 as ADS cratered, OFR FSI spiked to historic highs, the dollar surged on flight-to-quality, and HY credit spreads blew out. Over the 40-trading-session window WTI ratio-adjusted continuous fell from roughly 41 to 14.5, a minus 65 percent move. Nominal front-month crude briefly went negative on the April 2020 settlement.
Composite in state Stress for 40 sessions. Ratio-adjusted WTI minus 65 percent during the COVID demand shock.
Growth (bullish demand)
Apr 2009 – Aug 2009
The post-GFC macro-demand recovery and crude bounce
The composite moved into state Growth on April 30, 2009 as the ADS business conditions index pulled off its March 2009 trough, OFR FSI fell as the banking stress eased with the stress-test disclosures, the dollar weakened on QE1 expectations, and HY credit spreads tightened. All four channels aligned bullish. Over the 86-trading-session window crude ratio-adjusted continuous rallied plus 27.8 percent. The 2009 case illustrates the symmetric design.
Composite in state Growth for 86 sessions (123 calendar days). Ratio-adjusted WTI plus 27.8 percent through the post-GFC recovery window.

What this measures

Growth, market stress, dollar strength, and credit conditions determine aggregate crude demand. The composite blends four daily z-scores of Philadelphia Fed ADS (growth), inverted OFR FSI (calm markets), inverted 21-day change in the trade-weighted dollar (weak dollar bullish), and inverted 21-day change in HY OAS credit spreads (tight credit bullish). Positive composite signals growth-plus-calm-plus-weak-dollar-plus-tight-credit (bullish crude demand).

Why it matters

Why macro demand leads crude price

Crude demand is the integral of global industrial activity. Refineries run when gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel consumption runs. Shipping burns bunker fuel when goods flow. All of this is driven by the macro cycle. The PhilFed ADS captures the business conditions pulse. The OFR FSI captures market stress that pushes speculators out of inventory. The dollar sets the price emerging-market importers pay. HY credit spreads set the financing cost for physical commercials. The 19-year pattern confirms the mechanic. Growth state delivers plus 2.06pp forward 60-day edge. Stress state delivers minus 2.88pp edge.

Why this is the demand complement to the real-rate and positioning overlays

A crude stack reads three structurally-independent channels. The the US 10-year TIPS yield real-rate overlay reads the macro cost of inventory carry. The CFTC heating-oil positioning reads downstream demand via speculator positioning on distillate. This signal reads the macro demand directly through growth, stress, dollar, and credit channels. Each signal asks a different question. Is the opportunity cost of holding crude high. Are refiners expected to pull more crude. Is industrial demand for refined products accelerating.

How to use this signal today

The composite -0.206 reading is in the Neutral band and the phase has been running 7 sessions. The state-conditional forward sixty-day expectation is plus 1.38 percent, a plus 0.47 percentage-point edge above the plus 0.91 percent baseline. Not yet signaling demand destruction but drifting that way. The live composite z of -0.25 sits 0.44 standard deviations below trend. If it crosses minus 0.5, the signal flips to Stress. Watch the daily refresh of ADS, OFR FSI, DXY, and HY OAS.
