SIGNAL OVERVIEW
The US 10Y TIPS real yield is a tax on commodity inventory carry. For crude it taxes harder than for grain. Tankage, shipping, insurance, and financing on a 90-dollar barrel total a larger fraction of market value than the equivalent on a bushel of soy, so rising real yields pull speculator flow out of crude faster.
The twenty-four-year pattern is clean and monotonic. The low-real-rate tail delivers a plus 2.91pp forward 60-day edge above the plus 1.81 percent baseline. The high-real-rate tail delivers a minus 3.16pp edge, 35 percent bigger than the equivalent bearish tail on grain. The signal is a state-conditional backdrop.

What the chart is showing. The dark line in the top panel is the US 10Y TIPS real-rate overlay composite on a tanh-bounded plus-or-minus one scale. Positive means low real yields (bullish commodity carry). Negative means high real yields (bearish, carry taxed). The bronze line in the middle panel is the CBOT soybean front-month in cents per bushel. The bottom panel tracks the 252-day rolling IC. Dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.3 state thresholds.

STATE AND HISTORY
Composite -0.911 (Moderate NEG, 124 sessions). US 10Y TIPS real yields are elevated enough to trigger the bearish-commodity band. The state has delivered minus 3.16pp edge below the plus 1.81 percent baseline.
THE REAL-RATE DRAG ON CRUDE CARRY
Crude carries a bigger real-rate drag than grain because crude carry costs are a larger fraction of market value. Tankage, shipping, insurance, and financing per barrel scale with price level. When US 10Y real yields rise, speculator flow rotates out of crude faster than it rotates out of other commodities.
HOW TO POSITION
The signal is a state-conditional backdrop. Read alongside the CFTC heating-oil positioning, macro demand composite, and 20-day momentum signals for a crude stack covering macro cost, positioning, demand, and price-technical channels.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite tag at the right edge of the top panel is sitting at -0.911, firmly in the Moderate NEG band near the extreme threshold. The bronze WTI line in the middle panel is trading near 96 dollars (nominal).

THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
WHAT THE REAL-RATE OVERLAY IS TELLING YOU
The composite reading of -0.911 sits in the Moderate NEG band near the extreme threshold. US 10Y TIPS real yields are deeply elevated. The raw z is -1.49, close to one and a half standard deviations above the 252-day trailing average. The competing real return on risk-free bonds has risen above a threshold where crude speculators prefer bonds over barrels. The state-conditional forward sixty-day expectation for the current band is minus 1.32 percent, a minus 3.16pp edge below the plus 1.81 percent baseline.
THE PERSISTENCE OF THIS REGIME
The current Moderate NEG state has been running 124 sessions. Historical analog: the 2022-March to 2023-March window of post-Ukraine inflation-fighting Fed hikes ran 371 sessions in Moderate NEG and delivered crude minus 16.7 percent. If real yields remain elevated through Q1 2027, the signal argues for continued macro pressure on crude independent of supply-demand fundamentals.
WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS READING
Two triggers. First, a composite cross above plus 0.3 (low real yields return). That requires TIPS 10Y to fall meaningfully relative to its five-year trailing average, which historically requires a Fed pivot toward easier policy. Second, the composite drifts back toward Normal. Less aggressive but would remove the current real-rate dissent from a bullish fundamentals thesis.

What this measures
US 10-year Treasury Inflation-Indexed Security (TIPS) constant-maturity yield, the real forward return on risk-free capital, z-scored on a 252-day rolling window and polarity-flipped so positive composite tracks LOW real yields (bullish crude carry) and negative tracks HIGH real yields (bearish, inventory carry taxed). Plus-or-minus 0.3 state threshold on the tanh-bounded composite.
Why it matters
Why real yields tax crude carry harder than grain carry
Every dollar of commodity inventory faces a real-rate drag equal to the TIPS yield. For crude the drag is bigger than for grain because crude carry costs are a larger fraction of market value. On a 90-dollar barrel, tankage runs 40 to 80 cents per month, shipping is dollars per barrel per voyage, financing is prime-plus-a-few on six-figure-per-tank inventory loads, and insurance is basis points on market value. Combined, crude physical carry runs roughly 1 to 2 percent of market value per month. When US 10Y real yields rise, speculators rotate out of crude faster than other commodities. The 24-year pattern confirms: high real yields state delivers minus 3.16pp fwd 60-day edge.
Why the single-leg level composite fits crude
The soy sibling of this signal uses a three-leg composite (level, 63d velocity, 21d velocity). Crude uses only the LEVEL. Why: crude inventory cost is a STOCK (level) not a FLOW (velocity). A crude PM holding barrels cares about the absolute real-rate yield they are giving up. The single-leg level composite reflects this. One input, one transformation, one state machine.
How to use this signal today
The composite -0.911 reading is in the Moderate NEG band and the phase has been running 124 sessions. Six months of sustained real-rate drag. The practical rule: run any bullish crude thesis smaller than fundamentals alone would suggest. Hedge the macro overlay with a long-TIPS or short-nominal position. Or wait for the first confirmation that real yields are rolling over.

The 14-minute research brief walks the full twenty-four-year signature of the crude real-rate overlay. Why crude inventory carry is MORE real-rate sensitive than grain carry. Why the single-leg level composite fits crude macro exposure. Three case studies. 2020 COVID zero-rate crush driving a plus 83.6 percent crude recovery. 2022-2023 post-Ukraine inflation-fighting real-rate spike driving a minus 16.7 percent correction. 2019-2020 demand-shock counter-example where low real yields could not prevent the pandemic-driven crash.
