SIGNAL OVERVIEW

The US 10Y TIPS real yield is the bar on commodity ownership. When the US 10-year TIPS yield sits at 2 percent, every dollar held in commodity inventory loses 2 percent annual real return to risk-free bonds, storage economics gets taxed, carry becomes expensive, speculators rotate out. When the US 10-year TIPS yield sits near 0 percent, inventory holds its value and commodities compete on fundamentals alone. This signal reads a three-leg composite, 50 percent level, 30 percent 63-day change, 20 percent 21-day change, polarity flipped so positive composite tracks LOW real yields (bullish commodity).

The twenty-four-year state-conditional edges are clean and monotonic. State plus one (low real yields, bullish) delivers a plus 2.08 percentage point forward 60-day edge above the plus 1.87 percent baseline. State minus one (high real yields, bearish) delivers a minus 2.35 percentage point edge. Daily IC and non-overlap 63-day IC are not individually significant, the signal is a state-conditional backdrop, not a tactical trigger.

LIVE CHART

Twenty-four years of US 10Y TIPS real yields against CBOT soybean forward returns.

What the chart is showing. The dark line in the top panel is the three-leg the US 10-year TIPS yield real-rate overlay composite on a tanh-bounded plus-or-minus one scale, positive means low real yields (bullish commodity carry), negative means high real yields (bearish, inventory carry taxed). The bronze line in the middle panel is the CBOT soybean front-month in cents per bushel. The bottom panel tracks the 252-day rolling information coefficient between the composite and soybean 60-day forward returns. Dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.3 moderate and plus-or-minus 0.6 extreme thresholds. Green band fills mark low-real-rate (bullish) extremes; red band fills mark high-real-rate (bearish) extremes.

STATE AND HISTORY

Composite minus 0.34 (Moderate NEG, 4 sessions running since November 2, 2026). US 10Y TIPS real yields are elevated enough to trigger the bearish-commodity band, speculators face a real-rate drag on inventory carry. The state has delivered minus 0.45 percent soy fwd 60-day on average, a minus 2.35pp edge below the plus 1.87 percent baseline.

THE REAL-RATE BAR ON COMMODITY OWNERSHIP

TIPS 10Y is the competing return that commodity speculators must beat to justify holding inventory. When the real yield rises above the structurally-positive soy carry, commodity flow rotates to risk-free bonds even when fundamentals are bullish. The twenty-four-year state edges are clean, low real yields deliver plus 2.08pp forward 60-day edge; high real yields deliver minus 2.35pp edge; the middle drifts slightly below baseline.

HOW TO POSITION

Daily IC plus 0.008 at p=0.42 is NOT significant on dense sampling. Non-overlap 63-day IC plus 0.085 at p=0.31 is NOT individually significant. The signal is a state-conditional backdrop, not a tactical trigger. Read as the fifth leg of the five-signal soy stack, fundamentals (ending stocks YoY), macro dollar (DX + FV), positioning (CFTC MM), curve (1m-12m basis), real-rate . Currently THREE of five read bearish (macro dollar, curve, real-rate), ONE reads bullish (fundamentals), ONE reads neutral (positioning). The three-against-one macro-plus-curve bearish read dominates.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite tag at the right edge of the top panel is sitting near minus 0.34, firmly in the Moderate NEG band, elevated real yields. The current run of 4 sessions in Moderate NEG began November 2, 2026, re-entering after a brief Normal-band break following the longer May-August 2026 run at elevated real yields. The bronze soybean line in the middle panel traces a sideways-to-lower pattern through 2026, consistent with real-rate pressure weighing on commodity carry.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite -0.389 Three-leg tanh-bounded composite of the US 10-year TIPS yield level (50 percent) plus 63-day change (30 percent) plus 21-day change (20 percent). In the Moderate NEG band, real yields are elevated relative to their five-year trailing average.
  • Raw rolling z-score -0.41 Composite inputs sit roughly one-third to one-half standard deviation above their five-year averages, not an extreme reading, but firmly above the plus-or-minus 0.3 threshold for the bearish-commodity state.
  • Phase run 4 sessions Current Moderate NEG regime re-entered November 2, 2026 after a brief September-October 2026 return to Normal band.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

WHAT THE REAL-RATE OVERLAY IS TELLING YOU

The composite reading of -0.389 sits in the Moderate NEG band, US 10Y TIPS real yields are elevated enough to tax commodity inventory carry. The raw z is -0.41. Translation from the macro channel, the competing real return on risk-free bonds has risen above a threshold where commodity speculators prefer bonds over inventory. This is the price-side readout of a restrictive monetary stance even as nominal rates have come down. The state-conditional forward sixty-day expectation for Moderate NEG is minus 0.45 percent, a minus 2.35pp edge below the structurally-positive soy baseline of plus 1.87 percent.

THE FIVE-SIGNAL SOY STACK

This signal is the fifth leg of the soybean signal family. The ending-stocks sibling reads balance-sheet fundamentals (currently bullish). The DX + 5Y sibling reads cross-asset macro stress (currently bearish). The CFTC MM sibling reads positioning crowding (currently neutral). The 1m-12m curve sibling reads the physical market (currently bearish). This signal reads the real-rate bar (currently bearish). Three of the five signals read bearish, one reads bullish, one reads neutral. The three-against-one macro-plus-curve bearish read dominates the fundamentals bullish view until either the real-rate pressure eases or the curve returns to backwardation.

WHAT WOULD CHANGE THIS READING

Two triggers that would re-engage the signal bullishly. First, a composite cross above plus 0.3 (low real yields return). That would require TIPS 10Y to fall meaningfully relative to its five-year trailing average, which historically requires a Fed pivot toward easier policy or a deflationary shock that drives real yields down. Second, the composite drifts back toward Normal, a less aggressive signal that would remove the current real-rate dissent from the fundamentals thesis. Watch the quarterly 63-day change leg for pivot signals; the level leg carries the structural weight.

THE REGIME MAP

The signal across 24 years of the US 10-year TIPS yield real-rate overlay

Low real yields (bullish commodity)
Jun 2020 – Sep 2020
The COVID zero-rate crush and the commodity carry re-opening
The composite moved into the Moderate POS band in June 2020 as Fed emergency zero plus QE drove TIPS 10Y real yields to deeply negative territory. The combination removed the real-rate drag on commodity inventory and opened the door for a classic carry-plus-fundamentals rally. Over the 103-session window CBOT soybean ran from 681 cents per bushel to 807, a plus 18.5 percent move. The 2020 case is the canonical low-real-rate rally, when real yields collapse, commodity carry economics flip from taxed to subsidized, and speculator flow rotates back into inventory.
Composite in state-plus-one for one hundred and three sessions; CBOT soybean rallied plus 18.5 percent (681 to 807).
High real yields (bearish commodity)
Mar 2022 – Jul 2022
The post-Ukraine inflation-fighting real-rate spike
The composite moved into the Moderate NEG band in March 2022 as the Fed began aggressive rate hikes to fight post-Ukraine inflation. TIPS 10Y real yields rose from deeply negative to firmly positive within months, and the real-rate drag on commodity carry became severe. Over the 122-session window CBOT soybean fell from 1430 cents per bushel to 1278, a minus 10.6 percent move. The 2022 case illustrates the override power of the real-rate channel, soybean fundamentals were historically strong (Ukraine supply disruption, tight stocks) but the real-rate bar on commodity capital was high enough to force a correction.
Composite in state-minus-one for one hundred and twenty-two sessions; CBOT soybean fell minus 10.6 percent (1430 to 1278).
Low real yields (bullish commodity)
May 2013 – Sep 2013
The taper-tantrum real-rate spike, the counter-example
The composite moved into the Moderate NEG band in May 2013 as the Fed signaled taper of asset purchases. TIPS 10Y real yields spiked from near-zero to firmly positive over the 135-session window as the taper tantrum repriced the entire yield curve. Over that window CBOT soybean ran from 979 cents per bushel to 1147, a plus 17.2 percent move, strongly against the signal. The 2013 case is the counter-example that illustrates the signal’s blind spot. A dominant fundamental story (that summer the US soy crop had serious drought concerns) can override the real-rate bar. The real-rate drag on inventory carry is a backdrop, not a trigger, it loses when fundamentals are sufficiently compelling in the other direction.
Composite in state-minus-one for one hundred and thirty-five sessions; CBOT soybean rallied plus 17.2 percent (979 to 1147). Counter-example where drought fundamentals overrode the real-rate drag.

What this measures

US 10-year Treasury Inflation-Indexed Security yield, the real forward return on risk-free capital, z-scored across level and two velocity windows with polarity set so positive composite tracks LOW real yields (bullish commodity carry) and negative tracks HIGH real yields (bearish, inventory carry taxed). Plus-or-minus 0.3 state threshold on the tanh-bounded composite.

Why it matters

Why the real-rate channel reads soy forward returns structurally

TIPS 10Y is the real forward return on risk-free capital. Every dollar held in commodity inventory faces a real-rate drag equal to the TIPS yield, when the US 10-year TIPS yield is 2 percent, inventory carry is paying 2 percent per year to the opportunity-cost of bonds. When the real-rate drag exceeds the structural commodity carry, speculator flow rotates out even when fundamentals are bullish. The 24-year pattern shows low-real-rate regimes delivering plus 3.98 percent soy fwd 60-day (edge plus 2.08pp above the plus 1.87 percent baseline) and high-real-rate regimes delivering minus 0.45 percent (edge minus 2.35pp below baseline). The signal is a structural backdrop that rewards being right about the macro regime, when real-rates are easing commodities get carry wind, when real-rates are tightening commodities get carry drag.

Why the signal is the real-rate complement to the dollar overlay

A fund PM reading soybeans needs five questions answered. WHAT is the balance sheet doing (fundamentals ending-stocks). WHETHER the dollar channel lets soy respond (macro overlay dollar-plus-5Y). WHETHER positioning is already in the trade (CFTC MM positioning). WHETHER the physical market agrees (1m-12m curve). WHETHER the real-rate bar lets commodity capital compete (this signal). The dollar overlay asks is the US currency too strong for EM buyers; the real-rate overlay asks is the competing bond return too attractive versus commodity carry. Both can be true simultaneously, which is the current regime, firm dollar AND elevated real yields. That is the hardest macro environment for commodities.

How to use this signal today

The composite -0.389 reading is in the Moderate NEG band and the phase has been running 4 sessions. The state-conditional forward sixty-day expectation is minus 0.45 percent, a minus 2.35 percentage-point edge below the structurally-positive baseline, consistent with elevated real yields taxing commodity carry. This signal strengthens the three-against-one bearish read in the five-signal stack. The ending-stocks fundamentals sibling reads bullish; the dollar macro overlay reads bearish; the CFTC positioning sibling reads neutral; the 1m-12m curve sibling reads bearish; this real-rate sibling reads bearish. When three macro-and-curve signals read the same direction against one fundamental signal, the stacked tactical read follows the three. The bullish trigger is a composite cross above plus 0.3, that would signal Fed-pivot-driven real-rate relief and open the door for the fundamentals thesis to work without macro resistance.
