USDA Hogs and Pigs quarterly, 3:00 PM ET on release day
As of Oct 30, 2026. Updated nightly.
OBJECTIVE
This is an event-driven signal. Four times a year the USDA Hogs and Pigs quarterly report lands, a count of the breeding herd in the field. The signal scores that release against the trailing three-year trend. A breeding herd materially below trend reads positive (tight herd, bullish Lean Hogs six to twelve months forward); a herd above trend reads negative (expansion, bearish forward). The signal fires on the release date, decays exponentially over the next ten trading days, then returns to zero until the next release. Between release windows the reading is 0.0 and the state is NEUTRAL. That is the design, not a bug. The current reading is 0.0 NEUTRAL because the September 30, 2026 release window closed on October 14; the next USDA Hogs and Pigs is approximately December 23, 2026. When the signal fires, the twenty-day forecast correlation is +0.062 with a 58.4% hit rate (p=0.000, significant) and a modest edge that fades to zero by day eleven. B-minus grade; the forecast is real but modest, and the usable trading window is the first week after each release.
LIVE CHART
Event-driven surprise fires, 1989 to 2026
What the chart is showing right now. The dark line is the event-driven breeding-herd surprise composite in the tanh-bounded space on the left axis. The bronze line is the underlying Lean Hogs nearby price in dollars per hundredweight on the right axis. The signal is non-zero only on and immediately after each quarterly USDA release; the long flat zero stretches between spikes are by design, not by error. The dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.2 moderate and plus-or-minus 0.5 extreme thresholds. The dashed vertical lines mark four historical release-day fires: the 2013 PEDv-era tight herd, the 2018 ASF-era expansion, the 2020 COVID packer-cycle contraction, and the current September 2026 fire. Band fills are cream throughout because the sixty-day IC is non-significant (+0.039, p=0.145); the usable edge is at the twenty-day horizon inside the event window, not at the sixty-day horizon.

STATE
NORMAL
Reading
Composite +0.000, state Normal, 18 sessions into a Neutral phase. The signal is zero between quarterly releases by design; the last fire window (September 30, 2026 release at +0.884) closed October 14. The next USDA Hogs and Pigs release is scheduled for 12/23/2026.
Why it matters
Breeding-herd size leads finished-hog slaughter supply by six to twelve months (114-day gestation plus six-month wean-to-finish). A tight-herd event on release day historically produces a ten-day forecast correlation of +0.062 with 58.4 percent directional hit rate (p=0.000). The signal is modest but statistically significant inside the event window; it says nothing between windows.
Posture
Event-driven composite input, not a stand-alone sizing rule. The B-minus grade reflects three honest downgrades: modest linear IC, macro-beta artifact (orthogonalizing to broad commodity return collapses the edge to +0.003), and empty regime axis (regime_grade F). Use in a four-lens Lean Hogs framework alongside the structural breeding-herd trend signal, the Hog-Corn Ratio, and Pork Cold Storage.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite sits at +0.000 because the signal is between release windows. The engine fires on release day with full magnitude, decays exponentially over the next ten trading days (tau = 10/3), and returns to zero outside the event window. The last fire was September 30, 2026 at reading +0.884 (breeding herd 5.87M, down 1.04 percent year-over-year, trailing-trend negative-z 1.39, inverted to positive extreme signal). That reading decayed to zero by October 15. What will move the signal next is the 12/23/2026 USDA release.
TOP INPUTS FIRING
- Primary composite +0.000 State Normal (neutral band); between-release zero by design
- Last fire +0.884 on 2026-09-30 September release: breeding herd 5.87M, down 1.04% YoY, 12th consecutive tight-herd print, smallest September print since 2014
- 18 sessions in Neutral phase Next USDA Hogs and Pigs release: 12/23/2026; event-window edge is strongest in the first week after each release
THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
If you hold a structural LH tilt
The composite sits at +0.000 because the signal is between releases. It says NOTHING directional right now, by design. If your structural tilt is bullish-LH on the back of the Hog-Corn Ratio (currently extreme-positive) or the Breeding Herd Lead trend signal (Normal / Neutral), this event-driven signal will fire a confirming or dissenting read on 12/23/2026 and that will be the actionable moment. Between now and then, position on the other lenses in your framework.
If you trade release day
The next USDA Hogs and Pigs lands on 12/23/2026 at 3:00 PM ET. The signal fires with full magnitude on the release print, decays exponentially (tau = 10/3) over the next ten trading days, and returns to zero on day eleven. The twenty-day forecast correlation is +0.062 with 58.4 percent directional hit rate inside the event window. The usable trading window is the first week after the release; by day eleven the signal fades to zero and the edge disappears. Pre-position in the 48-hour window before release based on expectation; sized adjustment after the print.
If you build a composite
Use this as the event-driven breeding-herd lens inside a four-lens Lean Hogs supply framework. Natural weight is five-to-ten percent given the event-only firing profile and B-minus validation grade. Pair with the Breeding Herd Lead (continuous YoY trend read), the Hog-Corn Ratio (producer margin), and the Pork Cold Storage Inversion (finished-product inventory). The composite captures different horizons: continuous structural trend from Breeding Herd Lead, release-day event from this signal, feed-cost pressure from Hog-Corn, pipeline storage from Cold Storage. Do not double-weight breeding herd (continuous + event together); each measures a distinct question.
THE REGIME MAP
The three states, forward returns and sample share
State distribution and forward-return sample across 9,299 trading days. The signal is zero outside event windows, which is why Normal dominates the sample at 96.7 percent. The fire-day samples (Tight herd and Loose herd) are small but direction-correct: tight-herd events are followed by stronger Lean Hogs forward returns than baseline, loose-herd events are followed by weaker.
| State | Phase | Share | Fwd 60d | HAC t | Edge vs baseline | Last firings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tight herd | +1 | 1.2% (116 d) | +5.55% | +3.96pp | Sep 2026, Jun 2026, Mar 2026 | |
| Normal TODAY | 0 | 96.7% (8996 d) | +2.84% | +1.25pp | Oct 2026, Jul 2026, Apr 2026 | |
| Loose herd | -1 | 2.0% (189 d) | +0.04% | -1.55pp | Jun 2020, Mar 2020, Dec 2019 |
Forward returns measured against Lean Hogs 60-day forward price windows across the 9,299-day sample (1989-11-30 to 2026-10-28). Tight-herd fire events are followed by +5.55 percent mean fwd60d (3.95pp above the +1.60% all-sample baseline), loose-herd fire events by +0.04 percent (1.56pp below baseline). The sign and the direction confirm the deployed mechanism — tight herd leads bullish-LH forward, loose herd leads bearish-LH. The small sample size (24 tight-herd runs across the thirty-six-year history) is the honest sample-count caveat; results are statistically significant on nominal n but the macro-beta artifact caveats apply.

Forward 60-day SPY is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.
What this measures
The signal reads the USDA NASS Hogs and Pigs quarterly report, specifically the national national breeding-inventory count. For each release (March, June, September, and December, around the 23rd of the month at 3:00 PM Eastern), it computes two things: a trailing twelve-quarter rolling mean (three years, the structural trend) and a trailing twelve-quarter rolling standard deviation. Deviation of the current print from that mean, divided by the standard deviation, gives a z-score. The sign is inverted so that a breeding herd below trend reads positive, and the output passes through tanh to bound between -1 and +1. On the release date, the full signal is laid down; on each subsequent trading day the magnitude decays by exp(-day / (10/3)), so the signal fades about 95% by day ten and returns to zero on day eleven. Outside the event window the reading is 0.0. Mechanically: breeding-herd size leads slaughter supply by six to twelve months (sow gestation is 114 days, finishing from wean takes approximately six months). A below-trend breeding count means less supply in the pipeline six to twelve months out, which maps to tighter hog supply and higher Lean Hogs prices on that horizon. The opposite holds for above-trend prints. The signal is systematic encoding of the single most-watched scheduled-release event on the Lean Hogs calendar: traders memorize the Hogs and Pigs dates, and limit moves on release day are common.
Why it matters
SCHEDULED EVENT
The USDA Hogs and Pigs report is the single most-watched scheduled release on the Lean Hogs calendar. Traders memorize the four quarterly dates. Historical gap-opens on release morning range three to eight percent in the ordinary case and ten percent or more in the tail cases. This signal does not predict the release; it scores the release against a transparent three-year trend baseline and quantifies how far from expectation the print landed, then translates that into a forward Lean Hogs read.
BIOLOGICAL LAG
The signal has a long translation horizon. Breeding-herd size on the release date forecasts slaughter supply roughly six to twelve months later (sow gestation 114 days plus wean-to-finish approximately six months). The twenty-day return correlation of +0.062 captures the first-week tape response to the surprise; the signal does not try to time the eventual six-to-twelve-month supply response, which is the domain of composite overlays like the Hog-Corn Ratio.
EVENT WINDOW
The signal is tradable only inside the ten-trading-day event window after each release. On release day the full signal fires; by day five the decay factor is roughly 22% of release-day magnitude; by day ten it is roughly 5%; day eleven returns to zero. Readers should expect to see the signal at an extreme only for the first two or three sessions after each quarterly print, moderate for the next few, and in the quiet band for the back half of the window. Between releases the signal is zero by design.
GO DEEPER
Thirteen years of release-day breeding-herd surprises, read as one Lean Hogs event signal
The research brief walks the event-driven mechanism (tight herd on release day leads bullish Lean Hogs forward six to twelve months via the gestation-plus-finishing lag), the four historical anchor fires (2013 PEDv-era, 2018 ASF-era expansion, 2020 COVID packer cycle, and the current September 2026 fire), the honest B-minus validation grade (modest 20d IC +0.062, macro-beta artifact caveat, empty regime axis), and how three different trader types are using the event window. Fifteen minutes, written for release-day-positioning Lean Hogs traders.
Signal consumers and siblings
The Lean Hogs analytics stack this event-driven signal plugs into. The release-day surprise compounds when paired with the continuous Breeding Herd Lead (trend read), the Hog-Corn Ratio (producer margin), and the Pork Cold Storage Inversion (finished-product inventory).
