SIGNAL OVERVIEW

This is a diagnostic signal, not a sized trading signal. Weekly US hog slaughter is reported by USDA every Friday for the prior week, and the deviation from the same week a year ago is one of the simplest supply numbers a hog trader can read. We show it here so readers of the Lean Hogs news page can see at a glance whether slaughter is running hot or cold against last year. The grade is honest at D: in-sample backtesting cannot find a statistically meaningful forecast of forward lean-hog returns from this reading. 60-day information coefficient is approximately +0.007, hit rate sits at 49.4%, permutation p-value is 0.82. There is no sized trading edge in this series, and we are not pretending there is one. The reading is useful as context (is kill running tight or heavy relative to last year, and in which direction is the trend moving) and should be composited alongside breeding-herd, cold-storage, cutout, and basis signals rather than read on its own.

LIVE CHART

Weekly hog kill YoY, 1992 to 2026

What the chart is showing right now. The dark line is the sign-flipped weekly hog-slaughter YoY composite in the tanh-bounded space on the left axis. The bronze line is the Lean Hogs back-adjusted continuous price in dollars per hundredweight on the right axis. The signal moves in a stair-step pattern that reflects the weekly cadence of the underlying NASS release — each Friday’s print snaps the composite to a new level, then it holds flat through the following week until the next release. The dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.2 moderate and plus-or-minus 0.5 extreme thresholds. Band fills are cream throughout because the Grade D validation does not support directional color-coding.

STATE

Moderate Neg

Reading

Composite -0.205, state Moderate NEG, 2 sessions into a Neutral phase. Weekly kill running approximately in line with year-ago, biased slightly below. Grade D: diagnostic context only, not a sized signal.

Why it matters

USDA FSIS counts every head through federally inspected plants. This is the cleanest real-time supply reading the Lean Hogs complex carries. Reader value is in the DIRECTION of weekly change (is kill accelerating or decelerating against year-ago) — not in sizing a position off the composite score.

Posture

Do NOT size off this signal. Use as context alongside structural breeding reads, cold storage inventory, and the event-driven Hogs and Pigs quarterly surprise. The 60-day IC of +0.007 with 49.4 percent hit rate is empirically indistinguishable from zero.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at -0.205 in the moderate above year-ago. Weekly kill has been biased slightly below year-ago across the trailing six weeks (approximately minus two percent on a 2.5-million-head weekly base). On the sign-flipped scale, below-year-ago reads positive. What would move it next is a weekly release that materially deviates from year-ago in either direction. The underlying slaughter number reports Fridays at 3:00 PM ET for the prior-week period.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite -0.205 State Moderate NEG (moderate above year-ago); diagnostic score only, not sized
  • Raw z-score -0.21 756-day z-score of the sign-flipped weekly slaughter YoY ratio; AR(1) autocorrelation elevated at the weekly cadence
  • 2 sessions in Neutral phase Phase start October 16, 2026 after flipping out of a prior short stress phase; next NASS FSIS release is this Friday 3:00 PM ET

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

If you hold a structural LH tilt

The composite sits at -0.205 inside the moderate above year-ago. For structural tilt purposes read as approximately zero — the weekly kill is tracking year-ago. The diagnostic use is: is this week’s kill above or below the trailing six-week trend. Positive = tightening supply flow, modest confirmation of a bullish-LH structural tilt. Negative = loosening supply flow, modest friction against the bullish story. Do not size on this reading alone.

If you trade the weekly release

The next NASS FSIS weekly slaughter print lands Friday at 3:00 PM Eastern. The release itself is not a market-moving event — most of the information is already in packer margin and cutout prints that come daily. Watch for weekly deviations greater than three percent from year-ago (direction either way) as a prompt to re-examine the structural supply framework. Weeks running at or near year-ago (the current state) are informational rather than actionable.

If you build a composite

Do NOT include this as a sized input. Grade D (60-day IC +0.007, hit rate 49.4 percent, permutation p-value 0.82) means the backtested forecast of forward Lean Hogs returns from this reading is empirically indistinguishable from zero. The signal has legitimate diagnostic value as context (direction of weekly change, size of deviation from year-ago) but no sized trading edge. Use the structural supply stack (Breeding Herd, Hog-Corn, Pork Cold Storage) for sizing.

THE REGIME MAP

The three states, forward returns and sample share

State distribution and forward-return sample across 8,709 trading days. The signal is DIAGNOSTIC: linear forecast of forward Lean Hogs returns from this reading is empirically zero at the 60-day horizon. The three states have forward-return means within half a percentage point of baseline — no bucket spread, no sized directional edge.

State Phase Share Fwd 60d HAC t Edge vs baseline Last firings

Neutral TODAY 0 88.7% (7726 d) +2.64% +0.05pp Oct 2026, Oct 2026, Oct 2026
Above year-ago -1 6.8% (595 d) +1.55% -1.03pp Oct 2026, Oct 2026, Sep 2026

Forward returns measured against Lean Hogs 60-day forward price windows across the 8,709-day sample (1992-03-26 to 2026-10-28). The bucket spread across the three states is approximately 0.7 percentage points, well below the sample standard deviation — the signal does not meaningfully separate forward Lean Hogs returns by regime bucket. This matches the Grade D validation: diagnostic context, not a sized sizing lever.

The historical pattern

Three slaughter moments the weekly kill tape captured cleanly

TIGHT SUPPLY
2014
PEDv virus. Weekly kill ran roughly 5% below year-ago for a sustained multi-month stretch.
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus killed millions of baby pigs through the first half of 2014. The lagged slaughter impact showed up in late 2014 and the first half of 2015, with federally-inspected weekly hog slaughter running approximately 5% below the same week a year earlier on a sustained basis. Simultaneously, surviving animals captured extraordinary carcass prices on tight supply; lean hogs set a nearby all-time high near $1.33/lb in May 2014. The signal registered sustained positive readings on the sign-flipped scale through the tight-supply window. Textbook event: the biology killed the piglets, the kill number showed the tightening, the price followed. This is one of the two clean cases the series caught in the modern record.
Weekly slaughter approximately -5% YoY sustained; LH all-time high $1.33/lb (May 2014)
PACKER SHOCK
2020-04-20
COVID packer closures. Weekly kill crashed approximately 40% against year-ago in a single week.
The sharpest single-week slaughter event in the modern record. Smithfield Sioux Falls, JBS Worthington, and Tyson Waterloo closed within ten days of each other through mid-to-late April 2020 as COVID outbreaks tore through packer workforces. US daily hog slaughter dropped from roughly 470,000 head per day to 330,000 (approximately -30% daily, -40% weekly against the same week in 2019). Hogs backed up on farms with no slaughter outlet; cash hog bids crashed from $0.70 to $0.37 per pound in six weeks; the LH futures bottom came in early May 2020. The signal registered extreme-magnitude readings on the sign-flipped scale. The signal did not predict the shock; it recorded it. That is the right way to read this tile in all slaughter events.
US daily slaughter 470k to 330k head/day in 10 days; LH cash $0.70 to $0.37 in 6 weeks
REGIONAL DIP
2022
PEDv resurgence (regional). Modest regional kill effect; the signal picked up a short-lived negative-year-ago print.
PEDv flared regionally in late 2022 (notably Iowa and Minnesota) in a smaller echo of the 2014 event. Weekly federally-inspected slaughter showed a short-lived dip against year-ago in the November and December 2022 window, roughly -1% to -3% against the comparable 2021 weeks. The signal reading on the sign-flipped scale ran positive but not into the extreme band. The event resolved without becoming a structural supply shock. Noted here mainly to document that the signal does catch regional virus events in the kill data, even when they do not become 2014-scale cycle-defining shocks.
Weekly slaughter approximately -1% to -3% YoY (Nov-Dec 2022); regional, not national

Scroll inside the table for the full history. Forward 60-day Lean Hogs is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.

What this measures

The signal reads USDA NASS weekly federally-inspected hog slaughter, totaled across all classes. The weekly series is reindexed daily, scored as a year-over-year ratio against its three-year rolling baseline, sign-flipped so an upward surprise reads negative for Lean Hogs, and tanh-bounded to the plus-or-minus one scale. Classified into a five-state regime machine.

Why it matters

WHAT THE NUMBER IS FOR

The weekly hog slaughter YoY reading is a reference number on the Lean Hogs news page. It answers one question: is federally-inspected kill running higher or lower this week than the same week last year, and by how much? That is useful context for anybody reading the daily cutout tape, the hazard stack, or the structural signal stack. It is not a forecast. The signal reading is bounded between minus one and plus one with the sign flipped so that a surge in slaughter reads negative; that framing is a convention for keeping the tile color-coded consistently with the rest of the Lean Hogs stack, not a prediction.

WHY IT IS NOT A SIZED SIGNAL

The honest validation grade is D. The 60-day information coefficient against forward lean-hog returns is approximately +0.007 with a permutation p-value of 0.82, which is noise. Hit rate sits at 49.4% at the 20-day horizon, essentially a coin flip. The grader downgraded this signal from a nominal C to D because period-dominance tests show the already-weak IC collapses by half when a single year (2025) is removed from the sample, which flags the modest apparent edge as regime-specific rather than structural. We ship the signal anyway because the underlying number (how many hogs got slaughtered this week versus last year) is itself useful situational information. We do not pretend it is a trading edge.

RISK OVERLAY

Treat this as a context tile. Do not add position size on an extreme reading in either direction; do not reduce size on a flip; do not treat crossings into the moderate or extreme bands as entry or exit signals. The signal carries no demonstrated forward edge. The number is useful for understanding what the hog kill is doing this week against year-ago comparison. For actual sizing, compose with the Hog-Corn Ratio signal (graded B+), the Pork Cold Storage signal, and the structural reads on the Lean Hogs news page. If you find yourself writing a trade thesis that leans on this reading, you are using it wrong.

GO DEEPER

Thirty-four years of weekly hog kill, read as one Lean Hogs diagnostic

The research brief walks the mechanism (USDA FSIS weekly hog slaughter against the same week year-ago), why this is the cleanest real-time supply number in the Lean Hogs complex, the honest Grade D validation (60-day information coefficient approximately +0.007, hit rate 49.4 percent, no sized trading edge), why we publish it anyway (because context has value even when sizing does not), and how three different trader types use the weekly release for diagnostic reads rather than directional positioning. Fifteen minutes, written for Lean Hogs supply-stack composite builders.

Signal consumers and siblings

The Lean Hogs analytics stack this weekly slaughter diagnostic plugs into. The weekly kill reading is useful as context when read against the structural supply reads (Breeding Herd Lead, Hog-Corn Ratio, Pork Cold Storage Inversion) and the event-driven Hogs and Pigs quarterly surprise.
