OBJECTIVE

South Korea is the largest buyer of US beef by export volume, ahead of Japan. Korean imports from the US averaged approximately 275,000 metric tons annually through the 2020-2024 window, representing roughly 25-30 percent of total US beef exports. The USDA Weekly Export Sales report tracks these commitments in near-real-time with a Thursday morning release for the prior week. When Korean export sales accelerate year-over-year, demand-pull on US beef tightens the forward supply balance and lifts cash cattle prices. The transmission is direct: a Korean import contract today becomes US packer production 2-6 weeks forward, pulling cattle from feedlot inventory and firming the cash cattle market. Korean preference for US high-marbled short-ribs (galbi), chuck roll, and clod makes US-origin demand sticky through the Korean barbecue consumer segment. This signal reads USDA Weekly Export Sales to Korea for beef products, computes year-over-year percent change, z-scores on a 504-day (two-year) rolling window, and bounds with tanh. State thresholds plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). In September 2019 the signal pinned at +0.85 with LC at 94.20 cents per pound through the pre-ASF Korea demand-pull window; LC rallied 28 percent over the next sixty days as the demand-side tailwind combined with US-side supply tightening. In January 2020 the signal fired at -0.60 as pre-COVID Korea sales decelerated and LC at 126.73 cycle-high gave way to the COVID packer-closure shock; LC crashed 34 percent. The memorable twist: Grade B+ with daily IC +0.051 at p=1.5e-6 (significant). Phase +1 (Strong Exports) delivers +3.84 percent per-day fwd60d (hit 79.4%!) — the highest hit rate of any demand-side overlay in the LC stack. Read on for the current 34-day Moderate Positive firing, the 2019 and 2020 anchor cases, and how to pair with the LC fundamental stack.

STATE AND HISTORY

Strong Exports moderate-positive firing, 34 trading days running. Phase +1 historically delivers mean fwd60d LC +3.84%, hit rate 79.4%, +2.82 pp above the +1.02% baseline. The 2019 pre-ASF Korea demand-pull anchor delivered +28%.

THE DEMAND-PULL MECHANISM

Korea is #1 US beef destination (~25-30% of exports). Export commitment today → US packer production 2-6 weeks forward → cattle pulled from feedlot → cash cattle firms → LC forward firms. Korean galbi/chuck/clod preference makes US-origin demand sticky.

HOW TO POSITION

Pair with the LC-corn ratio signal (feedlot-margin primary), commercial positioning (hedge regime), FAO Cereal (global grain stress), Japan exports (demand-pull sibling), cattle-on-feed (near-term supply).

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.427 in the Strong Exports moderate-positive band, 34 trading days running. The blue signal line has moved into positive territory as USDA Korea WES commitments elevated. CME Live Cattle (orange) has traded in the \$220-230 range. The 2019 September pre-ASF anchor is visible as the deepest earlier Strong Exports firing.

What this measures

The signal pulls USDA Weekly Export Sales for beef products (USDA_WES_WEEKLY, destination=Korea), computes rolling 52-week cumulative sales, takes year-over-year percent change, z-scores on a 504-day (two-year) rolling window, and bounds with tanh. State thresholds plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Weekly USDA release Thursday morning for prior week commitments.

Why it matters

Why Korea is the critical demand-side driver for US LC

South Korea is the #1 buyer of US beef by export volume — approximately 275,000 metric tons annually, representing 25-30 percent of total US beef exports. Korean consumers have a strong preference for US-origin high-marbled short-ribs (galbi), chuck roll, and clod for the Korean barbecue segment. US-origin demand is sticky through this preference. Export commitments translate directly to US packer production 2-6 weeks forward, pulling cattle from feedlot inventory and firming the cash cattle market. The Korea signal catches the largest-single-destination demand-pull.

Why Phase +1 hit rate is 79.4 percent

Daily Spearman IC against LC fwd60d is +0.051 at p-value 1.46e-6 across 8,989 observations — significant but modest. However, Phase +1 state-conditional stats are much stronger: mean fwd60d +3.84 percent, hit rate 79.4 percent, +2.82 pp above the +1.02 percent baseline. The 79.4% hit rate is the highest among the LC demand-side overlay stack. The signal fires relatively rarely (9.1% of sample) but when it fires, forward LC direction is strongly positive.

How to use this signal today

Pair with the LC-corn ratio signal (supply-side primary), commercial positioning (hedge regime), FAO Cereal Price (global grain stress), Japan export signal (second demand-pull sibling), USDA cattle-on-feed (US-supply). Korea export signal is the primary demand-pull leading edge via Thursday WES releases. Current firing is in the Moderate POS band; watch for strengthening into EXTREME POS.
