Napkin Math

Let’s run the numbers.

The arithmetic

Rough estimate

Chinese pigs killed by ASF (Aug 2018 to Feb 2020) ~225 million
Average market hog weight ~285 lb
Total pig biomass 225M × 285 = 64 billion lbs
Convert to tonnes ~29 million tonnes
Pig density (~slightly denser than water) ~1.1 g/cm³
Total volume ~26 million m³
Central Park lawn area 3.41 km² = 3.41 million m²
Depth 26M ÷ 3.41M = 7.6 m
Depth of the pile ~25 feet
C

The answerAbout 25 feet deep, three stories tall, blanketing Central Park end to end. The world’s protein balance sheet has never fully recovered. The Chinese sow herd remains 5 to 8 percent below its pre-ASF peak by most reliable independent counts, four years after the outbreak.

Why this matters

The scene is a biomass calculation. The market is the tail risk.

African Swine Fever is the single largest tail risk in the Lean Hogs balance sheet. The virus is harmless to humans but near-100 percent lethal to pigs for the virulent genotype II strain within 7 to 10 days of exposure, with no commercially available vaccine. The 2018 to 2020 Chinese outbreak removed roughly a third of the world’s largest total hog inventory in 18 months, with breeding-herd losses closer to 40 percent.

The virus is now endemic across much of the globe: China (where the 2018 outbreak still smolders), Vietnam, the Philippines, Russia (where the modern outbreak originated), Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and large parts of Eastern Europe. It has not reached the US commercial herd, which is why the USDA-APHIS Animal Disease Traceability rule, the Secure Pork Supply biosecurity protocols, and roughly $500 million a year in industry biosecurity spending exist. Every port-of-entry agricultural inspection in the United States has ASF as a top-three priority.

If ASF reaches the US commercial herd, the first response is an immediate 72-hour export ban while USDA assesses containment. Lean Hog futures would open limit-down. Historical analogs suggest a 25 to 50 percent price drop that holds for months, possibly a year, before the market reprices the containment outcome. This is why every US pork export shipment and every US hog farmer carries ASF insurance that did not exist five years ago.

USDA-APHIS, ASF Response Plan, 2024 revision

For a Lean Hogs trader, ASF is the fat-tail option in the LH options chain. Deep out-of-the-money LH puts have traded at persistent premiums since 2019 for exactly this reason. The question is a thought experiment. The 25-foot pile in Central Park is a trader’s reminder that the pork market has a one-event scenario large enough to overwrite every other variable on the curve.
