SIGNAL OVERVIEW
Soybean oil and heating oil are both liquid fuels used in US transportation and heating. Heating oil (ULSD / #2 fuel oil) is the petroleum-derived distillate. Soybean oil is the biofuel feedstock for renewable diesel and biodiesel. Both are measured in USD per million BTU for energy-equivalent comparison. The signal reads the BO-HO basis on an energy-equivalent basis Z-scored on 36 years and tanh-bounded. When BO is cheap relative to HO (BO Premium Low), biodiesel/renewable diesel economics improve and demand for BO as feedstock rises. When BO is expensive (BO Premium High), biofuel economics weaken and BO demand softens. The signal is used TREND-FOLLOWING in BO Extremes Contrarian with polarity sign plus one. BO Premium Low (minus one, 42.4 percent of sample) delivers plus 3.45 percent BO forward returns (edge plus 1.90 pp, HAC t plus 2.24 significant at 5 percent). Today the signal reads at the 99.8th percentile in BO Premium High territory, 66 trading days in state, at the near-all-time extreme. Read on for the three cases that frame the signal, the state-conditional evidence, and the current reading in context.
LIVE CHART

What the chart is showing. The dark line in the top panel is the BO-HO energy-equivalent basis composite on a tanh-bounded plus-or-minus one scale — positive means BO is at extreme premium over HO (mean-reversion short-BO setup), negative means BO at extreme discount (mean-reversion long-BO setup). The bronze line in the middle panel is the CBOT Soybean Oil front-month in cents per pound. The bottom panel tracks the 252-day rolling information coefficient between the composite and BO 60-day forward returns. Dashed horizontal lines mark the plus-or-minus 0.2 moderate and plus-or-minus 0.5 extreme thresholds.

WHAT THE BO-HO BASIS IS TELLING YOU
Composite +0.993, state Extreme POS, 73 trading days running. Current direction and per-state baselines are in the regime table below.
THE BIOFUEL-SUBSTITUTION MECHANISM
Renewable diesel and biodiesel economics depend on the relative price of feedstocks (soybean oil, tallow, UCO) versus the fossil-fuel alternative (ULSD/heating oil). When BO is cheap relative to HO, biofuel margins expand and feedstock demand increases, supporting BO prices. When BO is expensive relative to HO, biofuel margins compress and feedstock demand weakens, pressuring BO prices downward. The signal captures this via the energy-equivalent basis.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
Biofuel economics also depend on RINs (Renewable Identification Numbers) and tax credits (BTC, Section 45Z CFPC) that are not captured in the raw BO-HO basis. During periods of high RINs prices or strong tax-credit support, biofuel margins can remain positive even with elevated BO-HO basis. Readers should supplement with RINs pricing data for a complete biofuel-economics picture.

Forward 60-day Soybean Oil is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. What this measures
Soybean oil and heating oil can be compared on an energy-equivalent basis (roughly 7.6 pounds of BO per gallon of HO). When BO carries an extreme premium over HO in this comparison, the basis empirically mean-reverts lower in CBOT soybean oil forward returns; when BO trades at a deep discount, returns mean-revert higher. The composite reads the BO-HO energy-equivalent ratio, z-scored on a 504-day window, tanh-bounded. State thresholds plus-or-minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus-or-minus 0.5 (extreme).
Why it matters
THE BO-HO BASIS IS A BIOFUEL-ECONOMICS INDICATOR
US renewable diesel and biodiesel producers compete with petroleum-derived heating oil / ULSD for the US transportation and heating fuel markets. Economic margins depend on BO (feedstock cost) relative to HO (petroleum alternative price). When BO is cheap relative to HO, biofuel margins expand and feedstock demand increases. The signal captures this via the energy-equivalent BO-HO basis.
BO PREMIUM LOW IS THE STATISTICALLY-STRONGEST STATE
Across 36 years, BO Premium Low state has delivered plus 3.45 percent BO forward returns, edge plus 1.90 pp above the plus 1.55 percent baseline. HAC Newey-West t of plus 2.24 meets the 5 percent two-sided significance threshold.
TREND-FOLLOWING POLARITY IN BO Extremes Contrarian
The signal has polarity sign plus one in BO Extremes Contrarian (ONLY trend-following polarity among the five BO Extremes Contrarian inputs). When BO Premium High (positive composite value, bearish for BO individually), it contributes POSITIVELY to the BO Extremes Contrarian composite. The Y composite is CONTRARIAN in BO forward returns, so a higher composite = lower BO forward returns. The signal’s extreme BO Premium High reading today translates to a strong bearish contribution to the Y verdict via trend-following polarity (unlike the other four inputs which contribute via contrarian polarity minus one).
