Z3753 USDA WASDE Report-Level Revision Velocity

The standard deviation of cell values within each monthly WASDE report, 504-day rolling z-scored. Measures the "churn" or "noise level" of each WASDE publication across all its reporting cells , a report-level revision-velocity signal that captures when USDA is revising estimates aggressively versus publishing stable updates.

OBJECTIVE

The USDA World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report publishes hundreds of cell values each month covering US + global supply-demand balances for corn, soybeans, wheat, rice, cotton, oilseeds, dairy, cotton, sugar, red meat, and poultry. The internal cell-dispersion within a single release , the standard deviation across all its reporting cells , can be interpreted as a report-level "revision noise" metric. When USDA is publishing stable updates (every month looks similar), cell-dispersion is low. When USDA is publishing high-churn updates (new crop estimates, policy-shift revisions, methodology changes), cell-dispersion rises. This signal queries `usda-wasde-cells` for all cell values, groups by `release_iso` publication date (model-grade publication-aware anchor), computes the standard deviation per release, filters to releases with 200+ cells (data-quality gate), forward-fills daily, z-scores on a 504-day rolling window with 126-day minimum, and tanh-bounds. The engine uses the ACTUAL WASDE publication date (`release_iso`) as the anchor , no look-ahead, model-grade design that the pre-patch US Corn Ending Stocks YoY INV (Publication-Lag Aware) should have followed. The empirical pattern across 36 years is weak but directional. 98 percent of history is in NORMAL territory (near-zero signal); only approximately 2 percent of history is in extreme states. extreme-pos state (val above plus 0.5, elevated WASDE churn) delivers mean corn fwd 60d of plus 1.85 percent (HAC Newey-West t plus 1.03, 143 state-days). extreme-neg state (val below minus 0.5, low churn) delivers minus 0.76 percent (HAC t minus 1.03, 41 state-days). Neither tail individually clears 5 percent significance. The signal reads +0.712 as of October 23 2026 in extreme-pos territory for 209 consecutive trading days at the 98.0 percentile , the longest sustained extreme-pos reading in the signal’s history. The signal contributes 7.7 percent weight to the LOCKED corn portfolio v1_1 Layer 1 base sleeve with polarity sign plus one.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.71 in the WASDE Churn High band. The October 2026 WASDE reconciled the 2025 US corn marketing year with meaningful cell-level revisions across production, ending stocks, and exports estimates. The signal fires at these release-day events. CBOT front-month corn (orange, right axis) sits near $4.48/bu.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • Primary composite +0.71 State WASDE Churn High. The October 2026 WASDE carried elevated cell-level revisions reconciling the 2025 marketing year.
  • USDA WASDE report-level cell-value standard deviation, 504-day rolling z Monthly USDA WASDE report. Each release’s across-cell standard deviation is computed, then 504-day rolling z-scored.
  • IC vs CBOT corn fwd 60d: Spearman +0.145, p=0.047 (N=189 firings) Marginally significant IC on sparse firing-day sample (N=189 covering ~16 years of monthly WASDE releases). Interpret as directional nudge, not high-conviction trade.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE WASDE CHURN MECHANISM

Monthly WASDE reports publish hundreds of cells across global agricultural supply-demand estimates. The internal cell-value dispersion captures how much variance exists ACROSS the reporting cells on a single publication date. High-dispersion months typically coincide with: new-crop projection introduction (May WASDE), methodology-change benchmark revisions, major policy-shift adjustments, and supply-shock crisis response windows. Low-dispersion months are routine updates with incremental revisions.

THE MODEL-GRADE PUBLICATION-AWARE DESIGN

The engine uses `release_iso` (the actual WASDE publication date) as the anchor for each cell-value standard deviation. There is no look-ahead because each publication’s dispersion is only measured on or after its publication date. The 504-day rolling z-score uses only trailing data. Model-grade publication-aware design , the pre-patch US Corn Ending Stocks YoY INV (Publication-Lag Aware) should have followed this template (see persona code review 2026-10-25 §2.1).

THE HONEST CAVEAT

The signal is a MACRO USDA METADATA indicator, not a corn-specific supply-demand signal. The cell-dispersion captures ALL WASDE cells (corn + soy + wheat + rice + cotton + oilseeds + meat + dairy), so the signal is not uniquely corn-focused. The current 204-day extreme-pos persistence reflects an unusual sustained-high-churn window that may be an artifact of USDA’s current benchmark revision cycle or methodology change , the signal cannot distinguish between these drivers. Neither tail clears 5 percent individual significance despite the 36-year sample.

What this measures

The engine queries `fundamentals_data.usda-wasde-cells` for all cell values. Groups by `release_iso` publication date, computes per-release statistics (standard deviation + count). Filters releases to those with 200+ cells (data-quality gate , early-sample releases may have fewer cells due to historical fill incompleteness). Takes the standard deviation as the churn metric. Forward-fills daily. Z-scores on 504-day rolling window with 126-day minimum. Tanh-bounds. Five-state machine on the final the primary composite.
