OBJECTIVE
Iowa State University economists have published monthly estimated returns to Iowa farrow-to-finish hog producers since the 1970s. The series nets Iowa farmgate hog receipts against the full cost stack: corn, soybean meal, non-feed variable costs, energy, health, interest, and labor. The output is dollars per market hog, and in the modern era it has ranged from minus 80 dollars a head in the 2018 African Swine Fever bust to plus 50 a head at the 2020 export-surge peaks. This signal reads the inverted producer return, z-scores it on a 504-day window, and bounds the result between plus and minus one. Deeply negative margins print at the extreme-positive tail; strong profits print at the extreme-negative tail. In December 2020 the signal entered extreme-positive liquidation pressure as the post-COVID packer backup forced producers to sell at losses. Lean hog futures rallied 22 percent over the next sixty days. In December 2021 another extreme-positive reading preceded a matching 20 percent rally as the breeding herd continued eroding. The memorable twist: the moderate bands flip sign. Moderate-positive liquidation reads bearish (minus 4.5 pp against baseline) and moderate-negative profit reads bullish (plus 2.0 pp above baseline). This is a cycle-turning-point reader, not a monotonic signal; only the deep tails give the clean liquidation-reward reads. Read on for the five-case history, the state the signal reads right now, and the nine-to-twelve month hog-cycle lag that drives the mechanism.
LIVE CHART
LH Iowa Returns Margin Signal
Composite reads +0.103 as of October 30, 2026, in the Normal band, 189 trading days running since February 2026. Iowa producer margins have stabilized through 2026 after the 2022-2023 cost-squeeze cycle. Historical state-conditional edge for Normal is -0.75 pp below the +0.41% baseline, a mild downside bias. The signal is a tail reader; the middle band is historically where it adds the least.

TODAY’S PLAYBOOK READING
STATE
NORMAL
STATE AND HISTORY
Normal band, 189 trading days running since February 2026. State-conditional fwd60d LH mean is -0.35%, -0.75 pp vs the +0.41% baseline. Normal covers 71% of the sample, so the middle band is the noise window.
WHY IT MATTERS
Deeply negative producer margins persisting three to six months force liquidation, which tightens supply 9-12 months forward through the breeding-herd channel. Signal captures the economic precursor to supply response.
HOW TO POSITION
Current band is a wait signal, not a tactical trigger. Watch for a move into Liquidation-Pressure (>+0.5) or Strong-Profit (<-0.5) tail. Only tails give the clean +8 pp / -2 pp edges.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite sits at +0.103 in the Normal band, 189 trading days running since February 2026. The blue signal line has drifted around zero through 2026 as Iowa producer margins stabilized post the 2022-2023 cost squeeze. CME lean hogs (orange) have traded range-bound in the $56-$62 zone. The engine state-conditional edge for Normal is -0.75 pp vs the +0.41% baseline, a mild downside bias. The signal is designed to pay at the tails; Normal readings are the wait window.
TOP INPUTS FIRING
- Primary composite +0.103 State Normal; 189 trading days running since February 2026 phase start.
- Raw z-score +0.10 Z-score of inverted Iowa State monthly producer returns (ffilled to daily), on a 2-year rolling window with 63-day minimum, tanh-bounded.
- State-conditional edge: -0.75 pp Normal historical fwd60d LH mean -0.35%, baseline +0.41% (edge -0.75 pp). Normal covers 71% of sample. Tails are where the signal pays off: Liquidation-Pressure +8.02 pp, Strong-Profit -2.27 pp.
THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
THE MARGIN CALL
Composite +0.103, Normal band. Iowa producer margins have run slightly below the trailing-two-year mean through 2026 but not deeply enough to flip into either tail.
THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT
Normal historically delivers mean fwd 60-day LH -0.35%, -0.75 pp below baseline. 71% of the sample sits in this band. The signal is designed to pay off at the tails, not in the middle.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
Cycle-turning-point reader, not a monotonic signal. Moderate bands read opposite to intuition. Signal half-life is approximately 60-90 trading days given the monthly input ffilled to daily.

Forward 60-day LH is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.
What this measures
The signal pulls the Iowa State University monthly Estimated Returns from Farrow-Finish Operations series, forward-fills the monthly observations to daily, z-scores the result on a 504-day (2-year) rolling window with a 63-day minimum population, applies a sign flip at the engine level so that deeply negative producer returns print at the extreme-positive tail, and bounds the output with tanh to plus or minus one. The state machine applies thresholds at plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme).
Why it matters
Why Iowa producer margins lead Lean Hogs forward prices
Deeply negative returns persisting for three to six months force producer liquidation: herd contraction, aggressive marketing, breeding stock culling. That liquidation tightens supply 9 to 12 months forward through the breeding-herd channel. The hog cycle has a 6-7 month farrow-to-finish biological delay plus the breeding-decision lead time, which creates a predictable lag between margin stress and supply tightening. The signal captures the economic pressure precursor to the physical supply response. This is why the Liquidation-Pressure tail delivers +8.02 pp above baseline ; the strongest single-state conditional edge in the Lean Hogs signal library.
Why the moderate bands read sign-flipped
Moderate-Positive (modest margin stress, not deep crisis) actually reads bearish forward, -4.52 pp below baseline. Moderate-Negative (modest profit) reads bullish forward, +2.01 pp above. This is because the moderate bands capture cycle-turning points, not the dominant trends. Modest margin stress often reflects a cutout rally that has run too far ahead of producer economics ; the forward move is a mean-reversion. Modest profit reflects the early stages of a supply contraction working through the system. The signal is a tail reader: only the deep extremes give the clean liquidation-reward and strong-profit-reversion edges.
How to use this signal today
Treat as a cycle anchor, not a sixty-day direction trigger. Current Normal reading means wait. Watch for a move into Liquidation-Pressure (above +0.5) which historically delivers the +8.02 pp constructive edge, or into Strong-Profit (below -0.5) for the -2.27 pp bearish edge. The signal has a known caveat: during supply shocks that distort both margin and price together (COVID packer backup, 2021 cutout rally), the sixty-day read can run backwards for a quarter before resolving. Pair with carcass weight, breeding inventory, and the hog-to-corn ratio for the full margin picture.
