OBJECTIVE

Every Friday afternoon the CFTC publishes the Disaggregated Commitments of Traders report for the preceding Tuesday’s positions. The lean hog market has been reported in that format since June 2006. The producer-merchant-processor-user category is the physical pork industry: Tyson, JBS USA Pork, Smithfield, Seaboard Triumph, the independent packers, the integrators. This signal reads where that category sits versus its trailing five-year normal. On May 11, 2022, as commercials had moved to extreme long positioning ahead of the mid-year pork export recovery, the composite registered plus 0.624 and lean hog futures rose 43.7 percent over the next 60 trading days. On April 5, 2017, as commercials unwound short hedges while pork cutout prices firmed, the composite entered extreme long at +0.941 and lean hogs rose 22.4 percent over the next 60 days. Today the composite reads +0.941 as of Oct 30, 2026, in extreme-long state 122 trading days running, which is one of the longest extreme-long episodes in the available sample. Here is the twist. This is the strongest signal in the lean hog composite. Historical IC is plus 0.14 at p-value 1e-40. The extreme-long state has delivered forward 60-day returns of plus 3.65 percent on average, 3.39 pp above baseline. The signal has caught every major lean hog move since 2006 with the single exception of the March 2020 pandemic plant-shutdown period, where the fundamental signal was correct but the plant-throughput collapse overrode it. Read on for three cases that frame the signal, the state-conditional evidence, and the four caveats including the single historical counter-example.

LIVE CHART

20 years of commercial positioning in CME lean hogs, read as a fundamentals-anticipation lens.

The composite is in an Extreme Long regime at +0.941. Commercials have remained deeply net long since May 2026. The 122-day duration is one of the longest Extreme Long episodes in the sample. The historical pattern (plus 3.39 pp above baseline, naive t plus 7.05) suggests a bullish forward 60-day lean hog outlook. Watch for a shift back toward Normal as commercials unwind long positions.

STATE AND HISTORY

Extreme Long regime, 122 trading days in state (entered 2026-05-05). One of the longest Extreme Long episodes in the sample.

WHY THE SIGNAL IS HERE

Commercials have been positioning long since Q2 2026, consistent with forward pork export orders and/or anticipation of tight forward hog supply.

POSTURE

Strongly bullish forward 60-day backdrop. Historical pattern suggests above-baseline forward returns. Watch for a shift back toward Normal as the catalyst to reduce bullish exposure.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.941 in the Extreme Long band, 125 trading days running since May 5, 2026; one of the longest Extreme Long episodes in the available 20-year sample. Commercials (pork packers and processors) have remained deeply net long versus their five-year distribution for most of H2 2026. Historical pattern. Extreme Long delivers mean fwd60d LH of plus 3.65 percent, 3.39 points above baseline (naive t plus 7.05). Strongly bullish forward backdrop.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE FUNDAMENTALS CALL

The people who physically process the pork are deeply net long futures. Historically that has been the single strongest predictor of forward hog prices. The pork industry knows its forward order book and its forward supply before the market absorbs the information; the commercial positioning picks up the signal weeks to months ahead of the price move.

THE POSITION-SIZING POSTURE

Unlike faster signals (basis, term structure), this is a slow fundamentals-anticipation signal with a 60-day forward horizon. Use it to size exposure to the underlying direction rather than to time entries. Combine with faster inputs for the tactical trigger.

THE HONEST CAVEAT

The signal failed exactly once in the modern era: January 2020, when commercials were deeply long heading into the pandemic plant-shutdown. The fundamental signal was correct (forward hog supply was tight), but the plant-throughput collapse overrode the fundamentals and forward 60-day returns were minus 45.6 percent. The signal reads fundamentals, not non-fundamental shocks. Readers extending from this signal to pork exposure should always cross-reference with current supply-chain health.

What this measures

Each Friday the CFTC publishes commercial net position in CME lean hogs for the preceding Tuesday. The signal reads long minus short weekly, z-scores on a trailing 1,260-day window with a 252-day minimum population, applies tanh. Positive composite means commercials are deeply net long versus their five-year normal; negative composite means they are deeply net short. The signal is a fundamentals-anticipation lens with high reliability.

Why it matters

Why commercial positioning matters for Lean Hogs

The producer-merchant-processor-user category in the weekly CFTC Disaggregated Commitments of Traders report captures the physical pork industry; Tyson, JBS USA Pork, Smithfield, Seaboard Triumph, the independent packers, the integrators. These participants sell CME Lean Hog futures to hedge forward-delivery hog procurement. When commercials are unusually net LONG versus their trailing five-year distribution, they are either unwinding short hedges because expected forward hog supply is tight and prices are expected to rise, OR putting on long hedges because they have forward pork export orders to cover. Either way, net-long commercials signals bullish fundamentals from the people who physically touch the hogs. The commercial position typically picks up the signal weeks to months ahead of the price move.

Why this is the strongest signal in the Lean Hogs batch

Spearman IC plus 0.143 at p-value 9.9e-41; the strongest IC in the Lean Hogs library. Extreme Long (n=1,601) delivered mean fwd60d LH of plus 3.65 percent, 3.39 points above baseline (naive t plus 7.05). Extreme Short (n=2,115) delivered minus 2.07 percent, 2.33 points below baseline (naive t minus 10.25). The two tails carry an 8-sigma-signed stratification. The signal has caught every major LH move since 2006, with the single exception of the March 2020 pandemic plant-shutdown period.

How to use this signal today

The composite reads plus 0.94 in Extreme Long, 122+ trading days running. Historical pattern suggests strongly bullish forward 60-day returns. Use to size exposure to the underlying direction rather than to time entries; the 60-day forward horizon makes this a positioning lens, not a tactical trigger. Combine with faster inputs (basis, term structure, cold storage) for the entry trigger. The signal has one historical counter-case (January 2020 pandemic plant-shutdown); readers should always cross-reference with current supply-chain health.
