OBJECTIVE
The United States is the world’s second-largest pork exporter. Mexico, Japan, China, Korea, and Canada together absorb roughly a quarter of annual US pork production, and when the dollar weakens year over year the local-currency price of a US ham or belly falls at the retailer level and export order books fill faster. This signal reads that macro tide. On May 30, 2023, as the Dollar Index rolled over from the mid-2022 highs and the signal entered its weak-dollar regime, the composite registered plus 0.530 and lean hog futures rose 37.1 percent over the next 60 trading days as Mexico-destined volumes rebuilt. On December 31, 2013, with the dollar at a cyclical low and the 2014 Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus about to tighten US hog supply, the composite entered its weak-dollar regime and lean hogs rose 34.7 percent over the next 60 days as the macro tailwind compounded with the supply shock. Today the composite reads -0.812 as of Oct 30, 2026, in Moderate-Negative state 110 trading days running. The dollar’s year-over-year rate of change has remained in the dollar-strength regime through most of 2026, which the signal reads as an export headwind for US pork. Here is the twist. This is a slow signal, not a tactical trigger. It does not move with the morning cash hog quote. It moves with the dollar cycle, which runs on multi-year arcs. The weak-dollar regime, which has run across 39 percent of all trading days in the sample, has delivered mean forward 60-day lean hog returns of plus 2.39 percent, which is 2.14 pp above the long-run baseline. Read on for three cases that frame how to read this signal, the state-conditional evidence, and the four caveats including what the signal missed in the March 2020 pandemic.
LIVE CHART
34 years of the dollar-pork export relationship, read as a macro tide.
The composite is in a Moderate-Negative regime at -0.812. The dollar’s year-over-year rate of change has remained in the dollar-strength regime through most of 2026, which the signal reads as a pork export headwind. The 110-day persistence crosses the stability threshold; this is a durable regime, not a transient dip. The signal has historically delivered its strongest above-baseline forward returns from the Weak Dollar extreme (which has run across 39 percent of all trading days in the sample).

STATE AND HISTORY
Moderate-Negative regime, 110 trading days in state (entered 2026-05-21). Durable regime at or past the stability threshold.
WHY THE SIGNAL IS HERE
The Dollar Index has traded firm through most of 2026 on the US rate-differential narrative. Year-over-year percent change remains positive (dollar stronger than one year ago), which inverts to a negative composite.
POSTURE
Slow bearish backdrop on the pork export side. Pair with faster inputs (basis, term structure, positioning) for tactical timing. Watch for a dollar-cycle rollover as the catalyst to move the signal toward Normal and eventually Weak Dollar.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite sits at -0.812 in the Moderate-Negative (strong-dollar) band, 113 trading days running since May 21, 2026. The blue signal line has been in the negative zone through most of 2026 as the Dollar Index has traded firm on the US rate-differential narrative. Historically the Moderate-Negative state has delivered mean fwd60d LH of minus 2.69 percent, 2.95 points below baseline; a sustained headwind on the export side. Dollar-cycle rollover is the catalyst to flip; until then, slow bearish backdrop on the pork export tide.
TOP INPUTS FIRING
- Primary composite -0.812 State Moderate NEG; running 113 trading days in moderate-negative since May 21, 2026; a durable regime crossing the stability threshold.
- Raw z-score -0.97 Trailing 252-day percent change of the US Dollar Index continuous close, z-scored on a 504-day window, NEGATED so weak dollar prints positive, tanh-bounded. Negative composite = strong dollar.
- Signal strength Spearman IC plus 0.079 at h=60 (p=1.6e-13). Monotone across all five states, with the strongest tail at Weak Dollar (+2.14 pp above baseline, naive t +8.47). Largest-weight input in the LH Truthsayer composite at 0.153.
THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
THE MACRO-TIDE CALL
The year-over-year dollar move is the single largest external driver of forward US pork prices across 34 years of data. Today the dollar is still year-over-year firm. The signal reads this as an export headwind. For readers who size pork-related exposure based on macro cycle position, the signal says "the tide is pushing against pork for the next quarter or two."
THE SLOW-SIGNAL POSTURE
This signal does not move with the daily cash hog tape. It moves with the dollar cycle, which runs on multi-year arcs. Readers who need day-to-week tactical signals should use faster inputs (term structure, basis, positioning). The macro-dollar signal informs the quarter-to-two-quarter view, not the day-to-week view.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
When a non-dollar shock dominates (pandemic plant shutdown, major disease outbreak, bilateral trade war), the macro-dollar signal is briefly dominated by the local disruption. The March 2020 pandemic case taught this limit: both the Strong Dollar entry and the Weak Dollar entry delivered roughly minus 27 percent forward 60-day because plant-throughput collapse overrode the dollar transmission. Readers extending from this signal to pork exposure should always cross-reference with the current trade-policy regime and the current supply health.

Scroll inside the table for the full history. Forward 60-day LH is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.
What this measures
Each trading day the US Dollar Index continuous close prints at the Intercontinental Exchange. The signal computes the trailing 252-day percent change, z-scores on a trailing 504-day window with a 126-day minimum population, applies tanh to bound the result into a scale from minus one to plus one, then negates the result. A weakening dollar prints positive in the composite. A strengthening dollar prints negative. The polarity is trend-following: positive composite correlates with bullish forward lean hogs through the pork export transmission mechanism.
Why it matters
Why the dollar matters for US Lean Hogs
The United States is the world’s second-largest pork exporter. Mexico, Japan, China, Korea, and Canada together absorb roughly 25 to 30 percent of annual US pork production. Over the 34-year sample, the weak-dollar regime (39 percent of all trading days) has delivered mean 60-day forward Lean Hog returns of plus 2.39 percent; 2.14 points above the plus 0.26 percent long-run baseline, at naive t plus 8.47. This is the LARGEST state-conditional edge in the Lean Hogs batch and the single biggest contributor to the parent LH Truthsayer composite at weight 0.153.
Why it is a slow signal with multi-year arcs
Dollar cycles run on multi-year arcs, not daily or weekly swings. The 252-day percent change smooths out short-term FX noise and tracks the macro tide. Historical cycles have been long and well-defined. 1992-1995 and 2002-2004 ran as weak-dollar waves with strong pork export growth. 2014-2016 saw the dollar rally on US rate-differential and the oil shock, pork export tonnage softened. 2020-H2 to 2021-H1 was the COVID-plus-ASF-recovery weak-dollar extreme. 2022-2024 ran strong-dollar on the Fed tightening cycle. 2026 shows moderate strong-dollar persistence into fall. Readers who try to use this signal for day-to-week tactical timing will be disappointed.
How to use this signal today
The composite reads minus 0.79 in Moderate-Negative, 110+ trading days running. The dollar’s year-over-year rate of change has remained in the dollar-strength regime through most of 2026. Sustained export headwind on the pork complex, not a transient dip. Watch for a dollar-cycle rollover as the catalyst to shift the signal toward Normal and eventually Weak Dollar. Combine with faster inputs for tactical timing, the macro-dollar signal informs the quarter-to-two-quarter view, not the day-to-week view.
