OBJECTIVE
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service publishes a Hogs and Pigs report four times a year. The headline line is sows and gilts kept for breeding — the national breeding herd. A sow bred today farrows in about four months, those piglets are weaned at three weeks, grown out, and reach market weight about ten months after conception. Which means the finished-hog supply ten months forward is already written in todays breeding-herd number, modulo mortality and litter-size shocks. This signal reads the national breeding inventory year-over-year change, inverts the sign (contracting herd prints positive, meaning tight forward supply), z-scores on five years of history, and bounds the result between plus and minus one. In December 2016 the signal pinned at plus 0.51 in the Tight-Supply tail as the post-PEDv breeding herd contracted year-over-year; lean hog futures rallied 15 percent over the next sixty days as Q1 2017 slaughter arrived constrained. In December 2023 another Tight-Supply reading at plus 0.86 preceded a 13 percent rally as the 2024 LH year opened on a strongly constructive supply backdrop. The memorable twist: the Tight-Supply tail delivers plus 12.1 percentage points above baseline — among the strongest conditional edges in the entire Lean Hogs signal library. The 15.6 pp tail-to-tail spread tells you the power is concentrated at the saturated extremes, not in the middle. The moderate bands cross the monotonic line in confusing order; this is a cycle-turning-point reader, not a continuous linear predictor. Read on for the four-case history, the state the signal reads right now, and why this is the longest-lead supply anchor in the Lean Hogs stack.
LIVE CHART
LH Breeding Inventory Signal
Composite reads -0.424 as of October 30, 2026, in the Moderately-abundant band, 43 trading days running since the September 1, 2026 NASS report. National breeding inventory moderately above trailing-year baseline, which the inverted signal reads as mildly bearish forward supply. Historical state-conditional edge for this band is +0.91 pp above baseline — moderately-abundant edges surprise positive versus intuition, part of the moderate-band disorder documented in the state table.

STATE
Moderate Neg
STATE AND HISTORY
Moderately-abundant band firing, 43 trading days running since September 2026. State-conditional fwd60d LH mean is +1.32%, +0.91 pp above the +0.41% baseline — moderately-abundant edges surprise positive, part of the moderate-band disorder.
WHY THIS SIGNAL MATTERS MOST AT THE TAILS
Tight-Supply tail delivers +12.12 pp above baseline — among the strongest conditional edges in the entire Lean Hogs library. Abundant tail delivers -3.53 pp below baseline. Spearman IC +0.087 at p = 1.8e-16, highly significant.
HOW TO POSITION
Watch for a move into Tight-Supply (above +0.5) which historically delivers the biggest cycle-turn reward. The signal updates on the NASS quarterly release schedule (late Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec) — pre-release positioning and post-release reaction are among the cleanest LH volatility events.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite sits at -0.424 in the Moderately-abundant band, 43 trading days running since the September 1, 2026 NASS report. The blue signal line has moved into mildly-abundant territory after the September print showed national breeding inventory moderately above year-ago. CME lean hogs (orange) have traded range-bound in the $56-$62 zone. The engine state-conditional edge for this band is +0.91 pp above the +0.41% baseline — the moderate bands cross the monotonic line, and this one edges modestly positive against intuition.
TOP INPUTS FIRING
- Primary composite -0.424 State Moderate NEG; 43 trading days running since September 1, 2026 NASS release.
- Raw z-score -0.45 Z-score of national breeding-inventory YoY change (ffilled daily between quarterly releases), inverted so contracting herd prints positive, on a 5-year rolling window with 60-day minimum.
- State-conditional edge: +0.91 pp Moderately-abundant historical fwd60d LH mean +1.32%, baseline +0.41% (edge +0.91 pp). The moderate bands cross the monotonic line; the signal pays off at the saturated extremes (Tight-Supply +12.12 pp, Abundant -3.53 pp).
THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
THE SUPPLY-ANCHOR CALL
Composite -0.424, Moderately-abundant band. The latest NASS reading (September 1, 2026) shows breeding inventory running moderately above the trailing year on a national basis.
THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT
Moderately-abundant historically delivers mean fwd 60-day LH of +1.32%, +0.91 pp above baseline. 8.1% of the sample sits in this band. The moderate bands cross the monotonic line — the signal pays off at the saturated extremes, not here.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
Signal updates quarterly on the NASS Hogs and Pigs release schedule. Between reports the composite ffills. If a cycle inflection happens mid-quarter the signal reads it one quarter late — pair with carcass weight, Iowa margins, and cutout signals for a complete farrow-to-finish supply read.

Forward 60-day LH is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. What this measures
The signal pulls the USDA NASS Hogs and Pigs quarterly report (late March, June, September, December) and reads the national-aggregate breeding-inventory line (sows and gilts kept for breeding). The signal computes year-over-year percent change, applies a sign flip so that contracting herd prints positive, z-scores the result on a 1,260-day (5-year) rolling window with a 60-day minimum population, and bounds the output with tanh to plus or minus one. The state machine applies thresholds at plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme).
Why it matters
Why the breeding herd is the longest-lead supply anchor in Lean Hogs
Finished-hog supply ten months forward is already written in todays breeding-herd number. A sow bred today farrows in about four months; those piglets are weaned at three weeks, grown out through nursery and finishing, and reach market weight at roughly ten months after conception. The breeding inventory count — sows plus gilts kept for breeding — is therefore a direct read on finished supply nine to twelve months out. A contracting breeding herd year-over-year means slaughter weight hogs will be scarcer about ten months forward, which supports futures through anticipation. An expanding herd means the pipeline is loaded. This mechanism is both the longest-dated supply signal in the Lean Hogs stack and the one with the highest in-sample positive-tail edge.
Why the moderate bands cross the monotonic line
The state-conditional table shows a clean monotonic pattern at the tails (Tight-Supply +12.12 pp, Abundant -3.53 pp) but the moderate bands sit the wrong side of baseline (Moderately-tight at -3.75 pp, Moderately-abundant at +0.91 pp). The reason: moderate herd moves in either direction tend to be cycle-midpoint readings, not cycle-inflection readings. Modest contraction often reflects a production system that is still adjusting from an earlier shock; modest expansion often reflects an industry that overshot cycle trough and is on its way back to normal. The signal pays off at the saturated extremes because those are the clear cycle-inflection moments. Treat the signal as a cycle-turning-point reader, not a continuous linear predictor.
How to use this signal today
Treat as the longest-lead supply anchor in the Lean Hogs stack. Current Moderately-abundant reading is historically mildly bearish on the moderate-band disorder; wait for a cycle-turning read into Tight-Supply (above +0.5) which delivers the +12.12 pp edge on history. The signal updates only four times a year on the NASS Hogs and Pigs report schedule — pre-release futures positioning and post-release reaction are among the cleanest monthly-horizon LH volatility events. Pair with carcass weight, Iowa margins, cutout, and CFTC commercial positioning for the full farrow-to-finish supply picture.
