OBJECTIVE
Every month the Iowa State University economics department publishes a number that tells independent hog producers whether they made money or lost money. In the modern era that number has swung from a loss of 80 dollars a head in the 2018 African Swine Fever bust to a gain of 50 dollars a head at the 2020 export-surge peaks. This signal reads the returns level directly, z-scores it on two years of history, and bounds the result between plus and minus one. Strong-margin months print positive; deeply negative margins print negative. In December 2020 the signal pinned at minus 0.52 in the deep-liquidation tail after nine months of COVID-era margin compression; lean hog futures rallied 22 percent over the next sixty days as the breeding herd contracted. In April 2019 the signal saturated near plus one in the high-margin band as the pre-ASF export rally juiced producer economics; lean hog futures fell 20 percent over the next sixty days as the market priced the upcoming supply response. The memorable twist: the engine source labels strong-margin months as near-term bullish for lean hogs. The 36-year data says otherwise. High-margin months historically precede weakness, moderate-margin-compression months are the deepest bearish state in the sample (minus 9.4 percentage points below the plus 0.4 percent baseline), and only the extreme-liquidation tail delivers the clean bullish edge. Read on for the four-case history, the state the signal reads right now, and why the near-term margin-reward label on this engine should be read as a cycle-contrarian liquidation anchor instead.

STATE AND HISTORY
Margin-Compression band, 68 trading days running since late July 2026. State-conditional fwd60d LH mean is -8.94%, -9.35 pp vs the +0.41% baseline, the deepest bearish state in the sample.
POLARITY FINDING
Engine labels strong margins as bullish-near-term. 36-year test inverts this: Spearman IC is -0.048 (p < 1e-5). Only the extreme-liquidation tail delivers the clean +8.52 pp bullish edge.
HOW TO POSITION
Current band is historically bearish. Watch for a move into Liquidation (<-0.5) for the clean cycle-contrarian setup. Pair with cutout-direction reads to filter demand-driven rally regimes where margins and futures run together.
WHAT THE CHART SHOWS
The composite sits at -0.326 in the Margin-Compression band, 68 trading days running since late July 2026. The blue signal line has moved into negative territory as Iowa producer margins compressed through H2 2026. CME lean hogs (orange) have traded range-bound in the $56-$62 zone. The engine state-conditional edge for this band is -9.35 pp below the +0.41% baseline ; the deepest bearish state in the sample. The rolling IC pane shows the 252-day Spearman has drifted negative, consistent with the signal long-term empirical direction.

- Raw z-score -0.34 Z-score of Iowa State monthly producer returns level (ffilled to daily), on a 2-year rolling window with 60-day minimum, NOT sign-flipped, tanh-bounded.
- State-conditional edge: -9.35 pp Moderate-Negative historical fwd60d LH mean -8.94%, baseline +0.41% (edge -9.35 pp). Deepest bearish state in sample at 3.8% of days. Only extreme-liquidation (<-0.5) is the bullish tail at +8.52 pp.
THE TAKEAWAY
What this means for you today
THE MARGIN-LEVEL CALL
Composite -0.326, Margin-Compression band. Iowa producer margins have run below the trailing-two-year mean through 2026, reading as moderate margin pressure.
THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT
Moderate-Negative historically delivers mean fwd 60-day LH of -8.94%, -9.35 pp below baseline ; the deepest bearish state in the sample. 77% of these firings have delivered negative forward returns.
THE HONEST CAVEAT
Signal construction is empirically backwards vs the engine a-priori. The near-redundant sister signal (the margin-pressure sister signal margin-pressure) reads the inverse polarity and delivers the mechanistically-correct direction. Treat this signal as a cross-check, not a standalone signal.

Scroll inside the table for the full history. Forward 60-day LH is measured from each run’s start date; a reader cannot trade off a start-date they only identify in hindsight, so this is a transparency log, not an alpha claim. Asterisked (*) returns are partial. The run is less than 60 trading days old. The full 60-day comparable fills in as more data arrives.
What this measures
The signal pulls the Iowa State University monthly Estimated Returns from Farrow-Finish Operations series (net return per market hog in US dollars), forward-fills the monthly observations to daily, z-scores the result on a 504-day (2-year) rolling window with a 60-day minimum population, and bounds the output with tanh to plus or minus one. The state machine applies thresholds at plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Unlike the sister Iowa margin-pressure signal, this construction does NOT apply a sign flip; the raw returns level is read directly.
Why it matters
Why Iowa producer margins read as a cycle-contrarian anchor on this construction
Independent Iowa farrow-to-finish producers negotiate hog sales in the Prior Day Report market, which captures about 30-40 percent of US weekly kill. When this segment is profitable, the industry is in cycle expansion: placements are rising, breeding herd grows, and nine to twelve months out supply tightens into whatever demand backdrop then exists. When margins crash to deep liquidation territory, the opposite happens: breeding stock gets culled, placements fall, and future supply contracts. The signal reads the SIGN of these cycle-phase pressures as a leading indicator for lean hog forward returns.
Why the empirical direction inverts the engine a-priori label
The engine declares strong margins as bullish-near-term. The 36-year Spearman IC against LH fwd60d is minus 0.048 (statistically significant at p = 5e-6). The state-conditional data confirms the inversion: both positive bands (High-Margin, Mild-Margin) deliver below-baseline fwd60d returns, and the Liquidation tail delivers plus 8.5 pp above baseline. The near-term margin-reward mechanism does not materialize in the data because the two-year z-window compresses too many cycle phases into a rolling baseline; the signal can only cleanly separate cycle-extreme states (liquidation) from the rest.
How to use this signal today
Treat this signal as a cross-check against the sister margin-pressure signal (the margin-pressure sister signal Iowa Returns Margin), not a standalone. The near-redundancy between the two constructions means effective information content approaches one signal, not two. The current Moderate-Negative firing is historically the deepest bearish state in the sample (-9.35 pp below baseline), consistent with the margin-compression-not-yet-liquidation twilight zone where cutout, feed, and futures compress together. Pair with the cutout raw-daily signal and the cutout smoothed signal (cutout direction) for the demand-rally filter.
