OBJECTIVE

The US Drought Monitor publishes a Thursday-morning snapshot of drought coverage across every US county, graded D0 (abnormally dry) through D4 (exceptional drought). Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois together host roughly 55 percent of US hog production and produce most of the corn that feeds those hogs. When D2+ drought coverage spreads across these three states, two things happen simultaneously: feed costs rise through the corn transmission channel, and direct hog production stress climbs through water, cooling, and heat-related productivity losses. This signal reads D2+ coverage across the three hog-belt states, z-scores on a three-year rolling window, and bounds with tanh. In July 2020 the signal pinned near plus 0.98 in the saturated-drought tail as Midwest drought locked in; lean hogs rallied 68 percent over the next sixty days through the drought-driven herd-liquidation cycle. In August 2008 the signal fired deep drought-free at minus 0.76 as record corn abundance and no drought pressured the forward curve; lean hogs crashed 40 percent as feed costs collapsed and finishers held hogs longer. The memorable twist: the signal has the strongest in-sample IC of any single Lean Hog feature at plus 0.0774. Both tails deliver real asymmetric payoffs — EXTREME_POS +2.33 pp above baseline, EXTREME_NEG -2.71 pp below. Read on for the current 68-day Moderate Drought firing, the 2012 and 2020 drought analogs, and how to pair with the Iowa returns-margin feed-cost pressure read.

STATE AND HISTORY

Drought Firing moderate-positive, 68 trading days running since July 28, 2026. State-conditional mean fwd60d LH is +3.92% in the EXTREME_POS band, +2.33 pp above baseline. 2020 drought analog delivered +68% over 60 days.

WHY BOTH TAILS MATTER

The signal is one of the few with meaningful IC at BOTH tails. Drought Firing (EXTREME_POS, n = 1,683) delivers +2.33 pp above baseline. Drought-Free (EXTREME_NEG, n = 2,422) delivers -2.71 pp — abundant corn supply and no production stress let finishers hold hogs longer, pressuring forward.

HOW TO POSITION

Pair with the Iowa producer-margin signal (the returns-margin signal) for the feed-cost transmission channel confirmation. USDM is a lead; margin is a confirming lag. Together they cover both the physical production stress and the economic pressure channels.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.489 in the Drought Firing moderate-positive band, 68 trading days running since July 28, 2026. The blue signal line has held in the moderate-positive zone through the Q3-Q4 window as hog-belt D2+ coverage elevated. CME lean hogs (orange) have traded in the $56-$62 range through the firing — not yet responding to the drought signal with the full herd-liquidation cycle rally the 2012/2020 analogs delivered. The signal is a lead, and the cycle may still be developing.

TOP INPUTS FIRING

  • State-conditional edge: +2.33 pp mean (extreme tail) EXTREME_POS fwd60d LH mean +3.92%, baseline +1.59%. The current MODERATE_POS band delivers +0.74 pp. The big edge is in the saturated-extreme tail — watch for the signal to climb above +0.50.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE DROUGHT CALL

Composite +0.489, in the Drought Firing moderate-positive band, 68 trading days running since July 28, 2026. D2+ coverage across the three hog-belt states has elevated vs the three-year baseline — not at the 2012/2020 saturated extreme, but a persistent firing.

THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT

Moderate-positive band historically delivers near baseline (+2.33% mean, +0.73 pp edge). The strong edge is in the EXTREME_POS tail: +3.92% mean (+2.33 pp). Current firing has NOT yet pushed into the extreme tail. Watch next USDM release for whether it climbs or decays.

THE HONEST CAVEAT

Weekly cadence means the signal updates once per week on Thursday 8:30 AM ET. Between releases the composite ffills — intra-week drought developments read one week late.

Drought Firing
2020-07-08
Drought-driven herd liquidation
Drought Firing saturated-positive on July 8, 2020, with composite at +0.98 as hog-belt D2+ coverage expanded rapidly through Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois in the July-August drought window. Lean hogs were at $44.05 post-COVID. Over the next sixty days futures rallied to $74.17, up 68 percent, as the drought-driven feed-cost push plus COVID packer-constraint overlap forced the fastest herd-liquidation cycle in modern record. Biggest in-sample Drought Firing win.
LH@start $44.05; fwd60d +68.33%; composite +0.98; drought-liquidation.
Drought-Free
2008-08-11
Drought-free abundance crash
Drought-Free deep-negative on August 11, 2008, with composite at -0.76 as hog-belt D2+ coverage dropped to near-zero through the record 2008 corn harvest window. Lean hogs were at $89.98. Over the next sixty days futures fell to $54.42, down 40 percent, as abundant corn supply plus zero production stress let finishers hold hogs through target weights and the pipeline bulked up ahead of fourth-quarter demand.
LH@start $89.98; fwd60d -39.51%; composite -0.76; abundance crash.
Drought Firing
2012-07-15
2012 historic drought firing
Drought Firing deep-positive on July 15, 2012, with composite at +0.95 as the historic 2012 Midwest drought locked in across Iowa, Illinois, and the southern Minnesota corn belt. Lean hogs were at $94.12. Over the next sixty days futures rose 7 percent to $100.75 before the full liquidation wave hit later in the fall. The 2012 drought is one of the two reference drought windows in modern US hog history.
LH@start $94.12; fwd60d +7.05%; composite +0.95; 2012 drought anchor.
Drought Firing

What this measures

The signal pulls the US Drought Monitor weekly release (Thursday 8:30 AM ET), computes the area-weighted D2+ drought coverage across Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois (the three hog-belt states that account for roughly 55 percent of US hog production and most of the corn supply), z-scores the result on a three-year (156-week) rolling window, and bounds with tanh. State thresholds plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Daily forward-fill between weekly releases.

Why it matters

Why hog-belt drought is a two-channel feed-cost signal

Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois together host roughly 55 percent of US hog production AND produce most of the corn that feeds those hogs. Drought in these three states hits both ends of the hog cost curve simultaneously: feed costs rise through the corn transmission channel (drought-stressed corn yield cuts supply which bids up cash corn), and direct hog production stress climbs through water, cooling, and heat-related reproductive losses in finishing barns. The net effect is a bullish push on forward Lean Hogs through the herd-liquidation cycle: producers under feed-cost margin pressure cull sooner and hold fewer gilts for breeding.

Why the EXTREME_NEG tail delivers mirror edge

The signal is one of the few in the Lean Hog stack with meaningful IC at both tails. Drought-Free (EXTREME_NEG, n = 2,422 days) delivers mean fwd 60-day minus 1.12 percent, minus 2.71 pp below baseline. The mechanism is symmetric: abundant corn supply plus zero production stress lets finishers hold hogs through target weights, bulking the forward pipeline and pressuring the forward curve. The classic 2008 drought-free precedent delivered a 40 percent 60-day drop.

How to use this signal today

Treat as the drought-cycle lead in the Lean Hog stack. Pair with the Iowa returns-margin signal (the economic confirmation lag) and the breeding-inventory signal (the ten-month herd-side consequence). The current moderate firing (68 days running) is historically constructive but modest — the big edge is in the saturated-extreme tail, not the moderate band. Watch Thursday 8:30 AM USDM releases for climb-vs-decay.
