OBJECTIVE

Lean Hogs and Live Cattle are the two major CME protein futures, and their tail co-movement is a function of two cross-market mechanisms: shared macro-demand shocks that move both proteins simultaneously (recession, holiday pulls, export narratives) and shared cross-asset flow regimes (managed-money protein-complex rotation). This signal reads the rolling 60-day density of days where both LH and LC moved more than 1.5 standard deviations in the same direction, z-scores on a five-year window, and bounds with tanh. In December 1998 the signal pinned at plus 0.85 in the saturated-coupled tail as the 1998 demand collapse coupled both proteins to the downside; lean hogs were trading at $21 and over the next sixty days doubled to $42 as the cross-protein tail-recovery kicked in. In July 2016 the signal fired decoupled at minus 0.54 with lean hogs at $75.68; the market crashed 45 percent over the next sixty days through the summer overhang. The memorable twist: the signal has weak aggregate IC (+0.0118) and the extreme tails deliver asymmetric but relatively modest edges (+1.33 pp coupled, +0.85 pp decoupled). Treat as a regime-identification signal rather than a continuous trading edge. Read on for the current EXTREME_POS firing (3 days running), the 1998 and 2016 anchor cases, and how to pair with the commercial-positioning read.

STATE AND HISTORY

Coupled Tails extreme-positive firing, 3 trading days running since October 28, 2026. State-conditional mean fwd60d LH is +2.93%, +1.33 pp above the +1.59% baseline. 1998 analog delivered a 101% recovery as both proteins rebounded.

ASYMMETRIC TAIL BEHAVIOR

Both extreme tails deliver positive edge vs baseline (coupled +1.33 pp, decoupled +0.85 pp) — neither tail is bearish on average. The signal primarily identifies cross-protein regime state, not direction.

HOW TO POSITION

Treat as regime overlay on the LH stack. Pair with the commercial-positioning signal (professional-side read) and the breeding-inventory signal (10-month forward supply) for primary directional calls.

WHAT THE CHART SHOWS

The composite sits at +0.578 in the Coupled Tails extreme-positive band, 3 trading days running since October 28, 2026. The blue signal line has just entered the extreme-positive zone after 36 days in neutral. This is an early-cycle firing. The 1998 anchor case is visible as the deepest coupled-tail firing in the sample. CME lean hogs (orange) are trading in the $56-62 range through the firing.

THE TAKEAWAY

What this means for you today

THE TAIL-COUPLING CALL

Composite +0.578 as of October 30, 2026, in the Coupled Tails extreme-positive band, 3 trading days running. Signal just entered the extreme tail — early-firing, not sustained.

THE EMPIRICAL CONTEXT

Coupled Tails historically delivers mean fwd60d LH of +2.93%, +1.33 pp above the +1.59% baseline. 1998 analog delivered +101% through cross-protein tail-recovery. Modest edge magnitude but constructive bias.

THE HONEST CAVEAT

Aggregate IC is weak (+0.0118). The signal is regime-identification, not primary direction. Pair with other LH signals for confirmation; do not trade on this signal alone.

THE REGIME MAP

The three states, forward returns and sample share

Computed from 8,989 trading days with observable LH fwd60d. Baseline LH fwd60d (unconditional): plus 1.59 percent mean. Both tails deliver positive edges vs baseline — the signal is regime-identification, not direction.

Coupled Tails
1998-12-11
1998 cross-protein recovery
Coupled Tails saturated-positive on December 11, 1998, with composite at +0.85. Both lean hogs and live cattle had sold off through a shared demand collapse and the joint-tail density reached a sample extreme. Lean hogs were at $21.20. Over the next sixty days futures rallied to $42.68, up 101 percent, through the cross-protein tail-recovery as both markets bottomed and reversed. Biggest in-sample Coupled Tails win.
LH@start $21.20; fwd60d +101.30%; composite +0.85; 1998 recovery.
Decoupled Tails
2016-07-25
2016 decoupled-tail collapse
Decoupled Tails deep-negative on July 25, 2016, with composite at -0.54. The LH-LC tail-density had dropped as the two proteins decoupled through divergent supply cycles. Lean hogs were at $75.68. Over the next sixty days futures fell to $41.13, down 45 percent, through the summer-overhang bear. Note: this is one of the few Decoupled Tails cases that delivered a large drop — most Decoupled Tails firings deliver near baseline.
LH@start $75.68; fwd60d -45.66%; composite -0.54; 2016 decoupled bear.
Coupled Tails
2008-10-15
2008 financial-crisis tail coupling
Coupled Tails extreme-positive in October 2008 as the financial-crisis liquidation coupled both proteins simultaneously. Signal fired above +0.70. Lean hogs traded in the mid-$40s. Over the next sixty days futures rallied modestly as the cross-asset recovery delivered.
Composite +0.70; 2008 crisis-era coupling.
Coupled Tails
2020-04-15
2020 COVID tail coupling
Coupled Tails extreme-positive in April 2020 as the COVID shock coupled both proteins through the packer-closure demand destruction. Signal pinned near +0.80. Lean hogs rallied over the subsequent 60-120 days as supply constraints and demand recovery delivered the cross-protein rebound.
Composite +0.80; 2020 COVID coupling.

What this measures

The signal computes the rolling 60-day density of days where both CME Lean Hogs (LH21260BD back-adjusted continuous) and CME Live Cattle (LC20040BD back-adjusted continuous) moved more than 1.5 standard deviations in the same direction, z-scores on a 5-year (1,250 trading-day) rolling window, and bounds with tanh. State thresholds plus or minus 0.2 (moderate) and plus or minus 0.5 (extreme). Positive = coupled-tail regime; negative = decoupled.

Why it matters

Why cross-protein tail-coupling matters

Lean Hogs and Live Cattle are the two major CME protein futures, and their tail co-movement is a function of two shared mechanisms. First, macro-demand shocks (recession, holiday pulls, export narratives) move both proteins simultaneously. Second, cross-asset flow regimes (managed-money protein-complex rotation) couple the two markets through shared positioning. When both proteins cluster at the tails together, a regime shift is underway. When they decouple, each protein is running on its own supply-demand cycle.

Why both tails deliver positive edge

Both the Coupled Tails and Decoupled Tails extreme states deliver mean fwd60d positive vs the baseline (+1.33 pp and +0.85 pp respectively). This is because the signal primarily identifies CROSS-PROTEIN REGIME STATE, not forward LH direction. Both coupling extremes historically coincide with inflections in the LH cycle regardless of which side of the inflection fires. Treat as regime overlay, not directional primary.

How to use this signal today

Treat as regime-identification overlay on the LH stack. Pair with the commercial-positioning signal (professional-side read), the breeding-inventory signal (ten-month forward supply), and the carcass-weight signal (short-pull confirmation) for primary directional calls. The current 3-day firing is early-cycle — watch for sustained firing to confirm the regime-shift narrative.
